I. Analysis of teaching material and the students The reading passage explains how seamen explored the oceans and what kind of navigational instruments were used to sailors before the seventeenth century. Students are not familiar with the topic, but they may be interested in this topic. As a reading part of this unit, it belongs to the input step during the process of the language learning, which has a great effect on output step. Therefore this lesson plays an important part in this unit. The students from senior 3 have already gotten some basic words and expressions and been quite familiar with the Task-based reading. So they can finish the reading tasks of this part.

Ⅱ. Teaching objectives By the end of this class, the students will be able to

Step1(3mins) Warm-up & lead-in 1.

Step2 (8mins) Pre-reading

1.

Show some pictures of navigators and explorers in the history, such as Zheng He and James Cook.

2.

Show some pictures of basic instruments for navigation: Sinan, astrolabe, sextant and quadrant.

3.

Teach the new words and expressions. Let students pay special attention to the phonics when memorize the words.

1.

Pair work. Ask Ss to read the text quickly to find out the structure of the text, and the main purpose of each paragraph. Then find the main idea of the text. Ask students to pay special attention to the first paragraph. 2.

Ask Ss to read Paragraph 2 to find out how to sail by using the nature and instruments individually. Then mind map this part of the passage. 3.

Present the question, when did early sailors have a practical method of measuring longitude?

Ask students find the key words about this question and find the answer for it. 4.

Ask Ss to read the information about the instruments and list the adjectives used for describing them. Then judge the attitude of the author through these adjectives.

Purpose To warm up atmosphere of this class and activate

students so that the class can go through smoothly and naturally.

Work in groups to discuss the navigators shown in the picture, then share their stories for the whole class.

Do a reading practice about the four basic instruments for the navigation and get the general information about them.

3.

Learn to spell the new words by using Phonics and memorize the words and expressions in certain contexts.

To teach students the words and expressions, give them some background information and help students to predict the passage so that they can understand it better.

Step 3 (25mins) While-reading 1. Read the text quickly to find out the structure of the text and the main purpose of each paragraph with their partners. By doing these they can find the main idea of the text.

Use reading skills -finding key words to finish the task.

Read the relative paragraphs carefully and finish the task. Learn and practice the new reading skills.

Step 4 (6mins) Post-reading Have a discussion.

Suppose you were a captain aiming to sail round Africa.

①What instruments will you choose for your navigation? ②Which personal qualities are very important as a good sailor? ③Will you try to use advanced technologies ? Why?

Discuss with their group numbers and answer the questions. Then share the answers.

Let Ss have a deeper understanding of the text. The open-ended question will help students to learn how to think and form a habit of thinking. Step 5 (3mins) Summary & homework 1.Review the passage.

2. Learn more relative information,such as One Belt and One Road. Then think about the relationship about them and write a short passage.

VIII. Teaching reflection Students need to do more reading practice to consolidate the strategies they have just learned. Good reading habit and reviewing habit are very important for them to make progress. Derivation words are becoming more and more important and they can help us to extend our vocabulary.
