Period I

A Pioneer For All People Aim basis:

This is the first period of this unit, which includes Warming up, Pre-reading and Comprehending of unit 2. It introduces something about agriculture, especially about Yuan Longping and his super hybrid rice. It can help the students, especially the students in cities, know something about agriculture. In fact this world faces a serious problem---starvation.

So after reading the passage about Yuan Longping, the students will know the importance of his achievements to man. Of course they will learn how they should try their best to make contributions to society. Learning Objectives :

By studying the text, the students will be able to

Yunalongping, a famous agricultural scientist in China, was born in a poor farmer’s family in the 1930s. When he was young, he found hunger was a disturbing problem in many places. Therefore, after his graduation from college, he devoted himself to his career to find a rice that had a high output. Luckily, his efforts paid off. In 1974, he invented a hybrid rice, which rid many farmers of hunger. Although he has made great achievements in his career, money means little to him.
