Teaching aims:

1. To develop the students’ skimming and scanning skills for the outline of the passage and dealing with some details about the navigational skills. 2. To improve the students’ skills of reading and making a summary of a passage. 3. To help the students have a a profound understanding of sailing in the ocean and arouse students’ strong interest in sailing. Teaching important points:

Greet the class as usual. Lead in the topic--- Identify early navigational instruments using 6 pictures. Ask them: •

1.Who is your favourite navigator? why? •

2. How many early navigational instruments do you know? Do you know their special functions?

Students’ activities Look at the pictures and express themselves freely to identify early navigational instruments. 1.Read the passage quickly to think about the outline. 2. Try to conclude the trick to work out the outline of a passage. 1.
