This is the third teaching period of this unit. The first task is to comprehend the passage about a visit to the moon and improve the ability of reading. And the second task is writing. In this period, students learn the knowledge of astronomy, especially about moon. At the end of this class, students can be interested in the science of astronomy by expressing themselves in English. 1. To introduce a visit to the moon and train students, reading ability. 2. To accumulate common knowledge about astronomy through the author’s experience, self-directed study and cooperation. 3. Be interested in astronomy by expressing themselves in English.

How to write a passage about settling questions in English.

How to describe the astronomy knowledge in English.

Task 1 Lead-in (设计意图:通过学生所熟悉的中国登月的故事,链接旧知识,激发兴趣,从而引导学生了解目前我们对月球的探索,然后导入本节话题。)

T:

Hello, everyone, last period, we learnt something about the development of life on the earth. So first I would like someone or some groups to perform the development of life on the earth for us. Who or which group would like to? S1:…

T: Now let’s watch a short video. After watching the video, please tell us what the video is about. S2:…

T: Now we will “travel to the moon” in this class.

Task 2 Reading

Go through your text quickly and silently and finish the following two forms within 8 minutes. 1. Read the passage carefully and then describe the three ways in which gravity changed for Li Yanping.

Left the earth In space On the moon The way gravity changed (1) (2) (3) 2. Read the passage carefully and then describe how his weight changed.

Left the earth In space On the moon Suggested answers:

1. (l)The gravity became very strong. (2)The gravity disappeared. (3)It became very light. 2. (l)He became very heavy. (2)He had no weight and could float around like a feather. (3)He was about one-sixth of his weight on the earth. (8 minutes later, students can answer the questions actively.)

Task 3 Careful reading (设计意图:通过分析句子成分来理清句子结构并进一步理解课文,提高分析长难句的能力。)

Since we have got the structure of astronomy and known the common knowledge of gravity, let’s read the passage again. While reading, underline the important phrases and long and difficult sentences. The weight changed (1) (2) (3)

1. It will not be as strong a pull as the earth’s.

(2)在as…as…

2. But when I tried to step forward, I found I was carried twice as far as on the earth and fell over.

Suggested answers:

(2)A +is+倍数+ as +adj./adv. +as +B Task 4 Post reading —writing

If you were given the chance to travel to the moon, what problems do you think you would face? List one of the problems and think of a solution to solve it. Requirements:

1. First list the problem you might have on the moon. 2. List the possible solution. 3. How the solution help solve the problem. 4. The writing must be written about 120 words.

I would be happy to accept the chance to travel to the moon. But if I visited the moon, perhaps I would face many problems. One of the problems I might have is how I should stop my food floating away. I would have to take all my food with me if I went to the moon. As far as we know, in the spaceship there is no gravity so the food would float around if it is solid. So I would make sure that it is specially made as liquid space food. I can put my liquid space food in a cub and then I would be able to eat it more easily. Perhaps I would use a straw to eat it. It would solve the problem.

Polish your composition and hand it in.

Gravitation of the Moon The gravitational field of the moon has been determined by the tracking of radio signals emitted by orbiting spacecraft. The principle used depends on the Doppler effect, whereby the line-of-sight spacecraft acceleration can be measured by small shifts in frequency of the radio signal, and the measurement of the distance from the spacecraft to a station on earth. Since the gravitational field of the moon affects the orbit of a spacecraft, it is possible to use these tracking data to invert for gravity anomalies. However, because of the moon's synchronous rotation it is not possible to track spacecraft much over the limbs of the moon, and the far-side gravity field is thus only poorly characterized. The acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the moon is 1. 6249 m/s2. Over the entire surface, the variation in gravitational acceleration is about 0. 0253 m/s2 (l. 6% of the acceleration due to gravity). Because weight is directly dependent upon gravitational acceleration, things on the moon will weigh only 16. 6% of what they weigh on the earth. The major characteristic of the moon’s gravitational field is the presence of mascon, which are large positive gravity anomalies associated with some of the giant impact basions. These anomalies greatly influence the orbit of spacecraft about the moon, and an accurate gravitational model is necessary in the planning of both manned and unmanned missions. They were initially discovered by the analysis of Lunar Orbiter tracking data since navigation tests prior to the Apollo program experienced

positioning errors much larger than mission specifications. The origin of mascon is in part due to the presence of dense mare basaltic lava flows that fill some of the impact basins. However, lava flows by themselves cannot explain the entirety of the gravitational variations, and uplift of the crust-mantle interface is required as well. Based on Lunar Prospector gravitational models, it has been suggested that some mascon exist that do not show evidence for mare basaltic volcanism. The huge expanse of mare basaltic volcanism associated with Oceanus Procell arum does not possess a positive gravity anomaly.
