Instructional design Name: Subject: Lesson type: 邹颖

Grade: Senior 1 Australia’s Dangerous Creatures Reading and Writing

Teaching time: 40 minutes Overall Design and Guiding Principles This is a reading and writing lesson which aims to develop students’

ability in learning about Australia’s dangerous creatures and learn how to protect themselves from being bitten. Meanwhile, students’ linguistic and cultural knowledge is expected to be enriched through reading, speaking and writing activities. In this lesson I mainly employed Task-based Teaching Method and the Communicative Language Teaching Method in the hope of helping them build their confidence in learning English and learn something about foreign culture.

First of all, the lesson will start with a daily dialogue about our summer vacation to lead in the topic about “travelling”. Then the teacher will show a picture of Australia and a short video of Northern Territory to arouse students’ curiosity about travelling there. The teacher will tell the students her cousin is in a dilemma about whether to go camping in the Northern Territory by showing the letter. Thus, the teacher will ask them to help solve the problem and find more about Australia’s dangerous creatures. In the second section, I mainly use Task-based Teaching Method by setting five individual tasks of extensive reading to assist students to fully understand the reading materials and grasp the method of reading comprehension. With the former two sections, students will get the information about how dangerous the creatures are, then in the next section I will ask students to make a poster about how to avoid dangerous creatures in groups to train students’

ability of transforming input into output through writing, and develop their self-protecting ability. The students will be asked to make a presentation about their posters to train their speaking ability and improve their confidence as well. Finally, I will ask students to think about their decision about whether my cousin should go camping or not and list the reasons. They need to finish the reply after class as homework.

Teaching Context Analysis of teaching material: This is a reading and writing lesson. The lesson focuses on learning the Australia’s dangerous creatures, aiming at developing students’

ability of reading comprehension and writing. The topic of this unit is closely related to students’ real life, thus students will be interested in it. This lesson’s task of making posters and presenting can build

students’ interest and confidence of English learning.

Analysis of students:

The objects of this lesson are students in Senior one. Students in this phase have already grasped enough words and expressions to understand this text, and students in Senior one are also very active.

However, they still have some new words in reading and difficulty in applying input into output. What’s more, some students have no confidence of English learning. Therefore, it requires teachers to set up the tasks from easy to the advanced to guide them.
