1. Get the students to realize the importance of food. 2. Get the students to know more about Yu Longping and then learn from him. Teaching Procedures: Step One: Warming-up

Show the students the following poem and ask them which Chinese poem it refers to.

Farmers are hoeing at noon, With sweat down the field soon; Who knows the food on the tray，

Is due to their toiling day? Step Two: Pre-reading Ask the students to consider the following questions 1. What do you think would happen if there were suddenly nothing to eat?

(suffer from hunger; starve to death) 2. To solve the problem of food shortage, what do we have to do? (grow more crops on less land) 3. Who managed to do that?

(Yu Longping) Step Three: Reading 1. Ask the students to read Paragraph 1 and answer the following questions: Why does he consider himself a farmer? Who has he struggled for? Why is the rice called “super”? 2. Ask the students to read Paragraph 2 and answer the following questions: What is his life goal? Why did Yuan Longping want to increase the rice output when he was young? What kind of way did he search for to increase the rice output? Did he succeed in finding such a way? 3. Ask the students to read Paragraph 3 and answer the following questions:

What does this paragraph tell us? (Yu’s hobbies, personality, and values) 4. Ask the students to read Paragraph 4 and answer the following question.

What does this paragraph tell us? (Yu’s dream) Step Four: Post-reading 1. Is Dr.Yuan more of a scientist, a farmer or a businessman? 2. Write a biography of Yuan Longping in the order of time.
