Teaching aims: 1、

To enable the students have the basic understanding of how seamen explored the oceans before 17C. 2、

To enable the students learn to use some basic reading skills, skimming, scanning and improve the ability of English speaking. 3、

To enable the students know some basic common sense about how to tell directions without modern technology when sailing in the oceans.

Teaching steps Step 1: Pre-reading 1、Discussion: What is the picture about?(One Belt, One Road) 2、Marco Polo: He is the most famous westerner to travel the Silk Road. While in prison, he told the story of his travels to a fellow prisoner who wrote his adventures down. Ask two students to show their mind-map in front of the whole class and make some supplements and further explanation. 3.

Work in groups to discuss the methods in red ones and share with others.(North Star, Sun, seaweed, clouds, knotted rope and sextant) 2.

Ask three students to share their results of their discussion. Sun: Seaweed: Help the students comprehend the geographical and physical

knowledge they learned to totally understand how to use nature and navigational instruments when sailing the oceans.

Work in pairs to deal with the situations.(Situation 1: What would you do to tell directions if you were lost in the sea in the day? Situation 2: What would you do to tell directions if you were lost in the sea at night?)

Step 5: Homework Consult the teachers or surf the Internet to find other

ways to tell directions when you are lost in the sea or in the wild.
