Unit 5 Canada -----“The True North”

The First Period Reading (I)

Teaching goals 教学目标

1. Make the students know the basic information about Canada and enlarge the students’ vocabulary as well as broaden their culture horizons. 2.Get the students to learn to use some reading strategies such as guessing, key sentences ,skimming ,scanning and so on, so as to get the main idea and find some detailed information of the reading quickly. 3. Improve the students’

reading ability. - guessing words, searching for information.

Step 1

Lead-in and Warming Up（5mins）

1. Show the students a map of Canada and ask them some questions:

1). Which continent is Canada in? 2). What ocean lies on its west coast? What about its east coast ? 3). Which country is on its south?

4). How large is it?

5).How long is it from coast to coast ? 2. Ask students to try to answer the quiz (P33) and find out how much they know about Canada. One minute for the students to choose their answers. Then check their answers by looking at the screen.

3. Ask the students to turn page 34 , read “A Trip On The True North” . In the reading Li Daiyu and Liu Qian will take them to get a close look at Canada

Step 2

Fast reading (5mins) Get the students to scan the passage and answer the following questions.(3mins for the students) 1 .What is the passage mainly about? The passage is about a trip of two girls, and it tells us some information about Canada. 2. What is “The True North”? “The True North” is the train that goes across Canada./ the cross –Canada train. 3.What is the route (路线) of the trip in Canada?

A. Toronto→Calgary→Vancouver→Thunder Bay. →Montreal B. Vancouver→Calgary→Thunder

Bay→Toronto →Montreal C. Vancouver→Thunder Bay→Calgary→Toronto→Montreal D. Toronto→Thunder Bay→Calgary→Vancouver

→Montreal Check their answers by looking at the screen. 设计意图：通过阅读前的任务式问题，引导学生带着某个问题进行搜寻式阅读，培养学生捕捉关键句及相关信息的技能。

4 .Ask the students to skim the text and match the main ideas of the paragraphs

Step 3. Carefully Reading (20mins)

Let the students read the passage carefully again and find the details from the

passage. Ask the students to deal with it individually, then check their answers with their partners. (5mins for the students) 1. Read Para.1 and finish the chart below

2.Ask the students to read the text again and do some true or false exercises . The students should tell where they can find the related information and correct it if they think the statement is false.（小组合作work in groups）(5 mins for the students) ____ 1. . Step 4. Summary (8mins work in groups) Ask the students to get prepared to say something about Canada by looking at the key points on the screen. 设计意图：检测学生对课文的了解情况及训练学生的口头表达能力。

Step 5. Homework (2mins) 1. Go over the text and memorize the new words and phrases in the reading and try to make sentences with them.

2. Get prepared to report what Li Daiyu and LiuQian saw in Canada.(in groups)
