Using Language: The story of Atlanta（教学设计）

一、教学课型：阅读，口语

二、教学内容分析：本课通过希腊神话故事来引导学生进行听说综合训练。宗教和神话传说源远流长是人类最初的文学形态，而希腊神话是西方文明的摇篮。本课时的教学对学生了解西方文化和英语语言发展是很有帮助的。

三、教学设计的总体思路：在多媒体教学环境下，先让学生了解一些希腊神话中的著名人物及故事。而后展示Hippomenes, the Greek Goodness of love和Atlanta的图片导入。通过课文的略读和细读，使学生学会抓住文章的主要信息，在了解故事的发展的基础上，分析人物性格。而后要求学生进行角色扮演，这更激发了学生的学习兴趣，以及对西方文化有更深的了解。最后对课文进行升华，让学生了解“世上无难事只怕有心人”只要努力拼搏就可以取得胜利的奥运精神。

Step 1: Lead-in



1: Show the photo of the Golden Apple in Fuzhou No.2 Middle School 2. Show some picutres about Zeus,Apollo to arouse the students’ interest 3: Match the names in some Greek mythology to their description. 设计意图：从身边的事物导入吸引学生注意，通过图片介绍以及人物匹配

学生了解感受西方文化的摇篮—希腊神话，激发学习兴趣。

Step 2: Introduction

Ask students to look at the pictures of the Greek Goddess: Venes and Athene and introduce the story of Atlanta and Hippomenes. Step 3: While-reading

1. Skim the passage and find the answers.



Ask students to scan the passage and try to finish the chart Topic Background Event Main Characters 



设计意图：要求学生通过快速阅读领会文章大意

2. Listen to the tape and try to find the answers to these questions.











(1)What was Atlanta’s rule?

(2) What about Hippomenes, his attitude? Discussion:

(1) What would you do when you heard Atlanta’s rule?

(If the one you love is better than you, would you like to make her your girlfriend or marry her?) 

(2) Why did Hippomenes change his mind? 

设计意图：通过听录音细读让学生了解Atlanta的“择偶标准”，以及Hippomenes对此的态度，让学生展开讨论现实生活中的问题，如果你所喜欢的人（尤其是女性）比你更加成功，你会选择让她成为你的伴侣吗？使学生能够在理解课文的细节内容上，就热点问题展开讨论，培养学生的阅读兴趣，提高口语表达能力。



3. Discussion on main characters’ personality(Group Work)

Ask the students to discuss the personality of the king, Atlanta and Hippomenes and write them down with some adjetives. 

设计意图：要求在理解文章的基础上，用所学的形容词归纳出人物性格，进一步把握文章中心意思。学生分组展开讨论，培养学生合作学习精神。





4. Role play

Pair work: Can you imagine the dialogues in these two pictures? 

Dialagues between Atlanta and Hippomenes, the king and the God of love. 

设计意图：在学生把握人物性格特征的基础上，要求学生进行角色扮演。根据文章的情节，对国王和Atlanta，以及Hippomenes与爱神之间的对话展开想象，充分激发学生的发散思维，使学生在活动中提高口语表达能力。





Step 4: Consolidation：Voice your opinion What can you learn from the story? 

设计意图：让学生就文章的写作目的以及主题进行讨论，使学生了解“世上无难事只怕有心人”，在生活中，遇到困难要懂得迎难而上。





Step 5: Homework

1. Write an essay about what you have learned from the story. (100-120) 

2. Predict the ending of the story.
