In the pre-reading part, instruments of ancient sailing are presented in the form of pictures. In the reading part, the article introduces how they use some simple instruments to find their latitude and longitude at sea. By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

the Bearing circle:

A seaman would measure the sun’s shadow and compare the height of the sun now

with the position of the 'sun at midday

the Astrolabe:

It would tell the position of the ship in relation to the sun and various stars. This gave the seamen the local time and allowed them to find their latitude.
