Step1 Warming up Show Ss some riddles. 1. What day of the week is the best for having fried foods? 2. What month do soldiers hate? 3. What is the smallest room in the world? Step2

Pre-reading Show Ss some English jokes and ask them to give the reasons why the jokes are funny. 1. Policeman: You can’t park here.

Driver: Why can’t I?

Policeman: Read the sigh there. Driver: It says, “Fine for Parking,” so I parked.

2. Girl: If we marry, will you give me a ring?

Boy: Of course. What’s your telephone number?

3. Daughter: Auntie kissed me this morning, Mum!

Mum: How nice! Did you kiss her back, dear?

Daughter: Of course not. I kissed her face.

Reading I

There are thousands of jokes which use “play on words” to amuse us. One person asks a question which expects a particular reply. Instead, what he gets is another kind of answer which makes the situation funny. Now read some of these customer and waiter jokes. Can you match the joke with the explanation? Explanation A The first person is asking for information about time. The second person treats it as a question about shape. Explanation B

The first person is angry about something and wants to say, “Why is this here?” The second person treats it as a request for information and gives an answer to the question. Explanation C The answer to the question contains a word which, when spoken, can have two meanings. Joke 1. C: What’s that fly doing in my soup?

W: Swimming. I think! Joke 2. C: What’s that?

W: It’s bean soup.

C: I don’t want to know what it’s been. I want to know what it is now.

Joke 3. C: Waiter. Will the pancakes be long? W: No, sir. Round.

Reading II Read the story and answer the questions. 1. How did Watson answer Holmes’ question?

Post-reading Some jokes are longer and tell a short, funny story. Read the joke about the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Doctor Watson, and decide which of the two kinds of jokes you like better. Discuss with your partners.

Step 6

Homework Change the story of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson into a dialogue. Act it in groups of three- Holmes, Waston and a narrator.
