Teaching Plan for Unit 3 Australia Learning about language Ⅰ.Teaching objectives:
1. Knowledge objectives:
⑴ Students can learn more about Australia including its people, animals, citizenship and so on by doing the exercises. ⑵ Students are able to use the words and expressions properly by completing the sentences. ⑶ Students know what can act as predicative and what other verbs can be used as link verbs by observing and practicing. 2. Ability objectives: ⑴ Students are able to work out the meaning of the new words by referring to the context. ⑵ Students can learn English words more easily by connecting the related words. ⑶ Students can use predicative correctly to express themselves in writing. 3. Emotion objectives ⑴
Students will not be afraid of learning English when meeting with difficulties by mastering some skills. ⑵ Students are interested in the English speaking countries including their cultures, people, life, wildlife and so on. Ⅱ. Teaching important points:
1.How to work out the meaning of the new words from the context. 2.What can be used as predicative.
Ⅲ.Teaching difficult points:
What other verbs can be used as link verbs besides “be”.
Ⅳ.Teaching approaches: 1.Task-based approach 2.Summarizing and practicing. Ⅴ.Teaching procedures:
Step Ⅰ.Lead-in 1.Show the students some pictures and ask them to share their feelings and experience about the study tour in Wuhan. 2. Tell the students a piece of good news that our school will organize another study tour in Australia this summer holiday. But only one class will be chosen. So we need to complete the challenge to win the chance. Step Ⅱ Completing the challenges. 1.
Ask students “how much do you know about Australia?” to start the challenges.
And get students to finish the tasks according to the instructions and then ask some of them to present their answers. ⑴ People of Australia Task 1. Complete the sentences with the words below. backgrounds nation citizens tolerance Aboriginal homelands migrants respect The majority of Australians are ____________from many different ______________. In fact, the only _______________whose ancestors have lived here for more than 200hundred years are the ____________people. Most Australians believe that having people from so many different ___________creates _____________and __________________ and makes Australia a stronger ___________and a more interesting place to live. ⑵ The early years of migrants in Australia As we all know, the majority of Australians are migrants from many different nations. Do you know the early years of migrants in Australia? Task 2. Read the paragraph below, paying particular attention to the underlined words, some of which may be new to you. Try to work out the definitions of these words and write them down in the second column. Then check your answer using an English-English dictionary and write the dictionary definitions in the third column. The first migrants arrived in Australia after a long voyage on small sailing ships. Life was very tough at first because they did not have adequate equipment or food. One of the first things they did was to dig the soul and sow vegetable seeds. However, it wasn’t easy to grow enough food for everyone and in the first few years they faced starvation. Despite all the hardships of those early
years, many of the migrants succeeded in building a good life for themselves. In the early days there were not nearly as many women migrants as there were males, so many of the men remained bachelors. Many dreamed of having a wife who would share their life and work alongside them as they built houses and established farms. Within a reasonably short time some had established large sheep farms and began to export meat and wool back to England. We know a lot about these early years of European settlement because most migrants corresponded with their families at home and many of their letters still survive. These early settlers owed their survival to hard work and determination to succeed. Word migrant adequate sow hardship bachelor correspond owe
Your definition
Dictionary definition Ask students to present their own definitions of the words and tell us how they get the meanings of the words. Try to guide them to refer to the context and help them to master the skill. ⑶ Citizenship of Australia What’s the capital city of Australia? On 26 January, Australia Day, in over 200 locations across the nation, more than 9,000 people will become Australian citizens. “By these citizenship ceremonies, we welcome those who have come from overseas from many different cultural and social backgrounds in to our communities and our nation,” said the Minister for citizenship and Multicultural Affairs. Task3. You will find it easier to learn English words in clusters. Read aloud the following words and write down as many words related to them as possible. Compare your lists with a partner and make your list longer. Meanwhile, remind the students to form the good habit of learning English
words efficiently. Example: rain, rainbow, rainfall, rainy, raindrop, raincoat, rainforest, rainwater Rain tax home rust time night autonomy defend tolerate celebrate nation city birth associate reserve way word tax home rust time tight
words related autonomy
defend tolerate celebrate nation city birth associate reserve way
⑷ Wildlife in Australia
As is known to all, Australia is famous for its huge, open spaces, bright sunshine, enormous number of sheep and cattle and its unusual wildlife, which include koalas and kangaroos.(show them pictures.)Let’s enjoy a story about a kangaroo. Task4. Read through this paragraph and underline all the predicatives. A kangaroo kept getting out of his enclosure at the zoo. Knowing that he was a good jumper, the zoo authorities increased the height of the fence around him, but, the next morning, the kangaroo was out of his enclosure again. So the keepers’ solution was to build an even higher barrier.
However, the nest morning, the result was disappointing-the kangaroo was not in his enclosure. The authorities, being desperate, increased the height of the fence again and again and it was soon over forty meters high. A camel in the next enclosure asked the kangaroo, “How high do you think they’ll go?” The kangaroo said,
“ That’s a good question. It seems to me, they’ll just keep going higher until somebody remembers to shut the gate at night!”
Guide the students to summarize predicative and link verbs by observing. a. What is predicative? 在_________动词后的部分就是表语.常见的这类动词有: ①.be (
/
/
;
/
;
) ②.感官系动词:
③.表变化的系动词:
④.表状态的系动词:
b. What can act as predicative?
⑸ Life in Australia Barbecue is very popular in Australia. Kim and Sam are having a barbecue. Task5. Underline the predicatives in this conversation and then practise it with a partner. KIM: The meat seems to be shrinking! SAM: Maybe there’s too much fat in it.
KIM: What can I do? SAM: It’s probably the wrong kind of meat for a barbecue. The best thing is to cook it very slowly. KIM: You know, it smells strange too. SAM: Is it rotten? Let’s smell. Hey! This isn’t steak!
KIM: So, what is it? SAM: Where did you get it? KIM: It was in the bottom of the fridge. SAM: Oh, no! That’s the dog’s meat!
KIM: Are you sure?
2.
Guide the students to write an application letter. It seems that we have a good understanding of Australia. To win the chance to go to Australia during this summer holiday, you’re required to write an application letter to the school office.
你是东湖高中七班的一名同学,你校将组织一个班级在暑假进行澳洲研学,请你代表7班给学校办公室写一封信,申请参加本次研学活动,并列出理由(如澳大利亚为什么吸引人;你去的目的)。
