Part three
Theme reading Whether they’re singing along with Curious George’s theme song or asking you to turn up a popular song on the car radio, children love music.
1
Here are some helpful tips on creating an appropriate musical library for your child.
2
Before you pick the songs, keep in mind that your child benefits from doing more
3
than just listening. To get the full benefits of music, children need to sing, clap and dance along with the tunes (曲调). Singing and moving to music tells the brain to make meaning of it, which is like thinking in language. We learn music by practicing it, making sounds and essentially training our brains.
Start with the familiar one.
3
Durbin, a childhood specialist, suggests starting with nursery rhymes before gradually moving into folk and classical songs as the children reach preschool age.
4
As you expand your child’s library, consider adding classical music – especially the piece tells a story or teaches them about instrumentation. You can try Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens or Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev, both of which use instruments to represent different animals and characters. The children can learn about specific instruments while learning a story.
Parental guidance is suggested. “Unless you think your child can make good selections, you’d better supervise what they are listening to,” Durbin says.
5
“As children get older, encourage them to be more independent of their selection of music. In the car, give them a choice of CDs or stations,” Durbin adds. A.
Not just for listening. B.
Pay attention to the classical. C.
Some children only take interest in pop music. D.
Consider the songs you sang during your growth period and start there. E.
But what kind of music should kids listen to at a young age? F.
However, some kinds of music are not suitable for school children. G.
Sit with your children and find new songs to add to their collection together.
