一、教材分析（the analysis of the material）

The topic of this unit is agriculture and all materials and languages center on it. The reading passage is mainly about a great agricultural scientist ---Yuan Longping and his achievements. After studying this passage, students can not only know about Yuan Longping but also learn some knowledge of agriculture. Also from this part, students can improve their reading ability and learn to describe a person in English.

二、学情分析（the analysis of students and their learning）

The design of this lesson is for the medium level students. They have had some basic knowledge of English learning and got some basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, some students still don’t know how to learn English efficiently and it’snot easy for them to use English fluently, too. So they need the teacher’s guidance to practice and improve abilities of autonomous and efficient English learning

三、设计思路(the thought of the design) 1.

为学生创设问题情景，激发学生的学习兴趣。同时也降低学习和理解的难度。

2．教师进行恰当的引导，有效“点拨”问题，协助学生进行有效的自主学习、合作学习，指引学生成为问题的“发现者”。合理进行师生、生生互动，让学生在快乐的气氛中有效学习并获得成就感。

3．知识学习与能力培养相结合。

4．尽可能将新词汇融入到warming-up的语境中学习，剩余的词汇在阅读或操练中通过猜测策略学习，为词汇的学习安排一定的语言环境。

四、教学目标(teaching goals)

1. knowledge aim：At the end of the lesson, the students are able to：

Understand the key words and phrases: hunger, sunburnt, struggle, expand, rid…of, be satisfied with, would rather, therefore, export, occupation and so on

2. Ability aims: At the end of this lesson, the students are able to:

1) Know something about Yuan Longping and try to describe a person in English.

2) Improve their reading skills and the ability of guessing or mastering new words according to a certain context

3. Emotional aims: At the end of this lesson, the students are able to:

1) Learn Yuan Longping’s spirits and his strong will．

2) Cultivate autonomous learning ability and improve the students’ spirit of cooperation and teamwork. 五、教学重点（

1. Enable the students to understand the key words and phrases. 2. Develop the students’ reading ability – getting and dealing with new information and guessing new words according to the context or pictures.

2. How tomake the students understand the deeper meaning of the passage.

3. How to enable the students to understand new words and phrases efficiently.

Stage 1 Pre-reading step1: Talk about “farming steps”

to lead to the topic.

Step2:Talk about the tittle and the picture in the passage，leading the students to guess the content of the reading.

Task1.from the titlle and the picture in it, maybe we can guess that the “pioneer” refers to Yuan Lonping. Task2. The style of the passage is a biography.

Dr Yuan Longping, one of China’s most famous scientists, has made great achievements in agriculture both at home and abroad. Born into a poor farmer’s family, Dr Yuan graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953, when many parts of the countryside were short of food. To solve the problem, Dr Yuan struggled to find a new way to improve harvests without expanding the area of the fields. Through many years of hard work, Dr Yuan developed what is called “super hybrid rice” in 1974.He became the first agricultural pioneer in the world to grow rice that has a high output.He has also circulated his knowledge to some other countries.Thanks to his research, the UN has more tools in the battle to rid the world of hunger. Dr Yuan is satisfied with his life but he would like to have more freedom to do his research. Famous as he is, Dr Yuan wants to lead a simple life and has a dream to export his rice so that it can be grown around the world.

Step2. Ask students to think carefully and get the main idea of the passage. Task: The main idea of the passage is about Yuan Longping who has made a great contribution to produce better rice.
