However, although they look dangerous because of their wide mouths and
sharp teeth, all but two or three kinds are harmless to humans.
Treatments for jellyfish stings and snakebites have also been developed and in the last five years there have been only three deaths from jellyfish stings and about the same number from snakebites Procedures 1. Warming up
⑴
Warming up by leaning something about Commonwealth of Australia
Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990s, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980s. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal
areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef ⑵Warming up by looking and saying
2. Pre-reading by reading the text aloud Reading aloud to yourself (from books that are age and content appropriate) is an excellent way to familiarize you with a new language. It is impossible to read and comprehend what you read unless you already know most of the
vocabulary included in the reading. So let’s go to the vocabulary list first to make a story out of the list, using your knowledge of English grammar and your imagination of life events. 3. Reading for forms
Read the GLIMPSES OF AUSTRALIA and others on page 22 to: cut/ the sentence into thought groups, blacken the predicative, darken the connectives and underline all the useful expressions.
4. Copying expressions and making sentences You are asked to copy all the useful expressions into your notebook after class as homework. You may make your own sentences with each of these expressions. Useful expressions below sea level, have adequate rainfall, support a large population, come to experience its unique ecology, be autonomous in some areas of government, from many different cultural and social backgrounds, encourage tolerance, respect and friendship enjoy 3 nights on board the Indian-Pacific, on…journey from…to…, view some of Australia's unique scenery, spot a fascinating variety of wildlife, observe some of Australia's most spectacular landscapes, change colour from grey-red at sunrise, make a reservation, drive…northwestwards
5. Transforming information
Now you are to read the text articles once again to complete the chart below.
