Step 1

Leading in

Enjoy a short movie of Charlie Chaplin. Step 2

Sharing jokes The teacher tells a joke and then ask the students to share their jokes.

Step 3

Dealing with the exercises about English jokes. There are thousands of jokes which use "play on words" to amuse us. One person asks a question which expects a particular reply. Instead, what he gets is another kind of answer which makes the situation funny. Now read some of these customer and waiter jokes. Can you match the joke with the explanation? 1

C: What's that fly doing in my soup?

W: Swimming, I think! 2

C: What's that?

W: It's bean soup.

C: I don't want to know what's it's been. I want to know what it is now. 3

C: Waiter, will the pancakes be long?

W: No, sir. Round. Explanation A

The first person is asking for information about time. The second person treats it as a question about shape. B

The first person is angry about something and want to say, "Why is this here?" The second person treats it as a request for information and gives an answer to the question. C

The answer to the question contains a word which, when spoken, can have two meanings. Answer key for exercise:

Reading Read the funny story between Sherlock Holmes and his friend Doctor Watson, and enjoy their humor.

Step 5

Role play Change the story of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson into a dialogue. Practice the dialogue in a group of three, each taking one of the parts-Holmes, Watson and a narrator. Then act the dialogue out to the class. Pay attention to the rhythm and intonation and try to bring out the humor.

Step 6

Summary

Ask the students to speak out their understanding of humor.

Step 7

Homework Make your own collections of jokes, funny poems or short stories. You can write the reason why you recommend it under each entry.
