Unit 2 Working the Land Teaching objectives Enable students to learn more about agriculture, countryside and farming, especially their relevant English words and phrases. Help Ss learn how to introduce a person by introducing Dr Yuan Longping. Focus of teaching Students’ understanding of the text by reading in general and in detail New words and phrases Analysis of the textbook The textbook is English for Senior Middle School, book 4, published by People’s Education Press. The arrangement of each unit is based on the input-output method: reading>grammar>using the language (writing, speaking and listening). The aim of the textbook is to shift the traditional teacher-oriented teaching method to a student-oriented one. Students should be encouraged to learn English individually or in groups, by using language in various situations. Teaching methods The main theme of the lesson is based on the PPP language teaching method (presentation, practice and production). A combination of different teaching methods including guided reading, group discussion (approximately 4 Ss in a group) and exercises is used. Teaching aids Textbook, blackboard and an ear of rice Teaching procedures Warm-up (2mins) Show the ear of rice and ask lead-in questions: Have you ever planted something? What do you think of farming and farmers? Stage1, Presentation I. Pre-reading (2mins)

Questions: What if there is no rice? How to help those who are in hunger? Brief summary of solutions to the problem

II. Skimming and scanning (2mins) Read the first sentence of each paragraph and try to figure out the general meaning of the text.

III. Reading in detail (10mins) Work in group, complete the following tasks (3mins~5mins). Then one or two groups will be asked (5mins~7mins). 1. Summarize the main idea of each paragraph (approximately 2 groups for 1 paragraph) 2. Give a brief introduction to Dr. Yuan Longping 3. Find some sentences that are difficult to be understood. (Offer guidance on understanding)

Stage3, Production I. Speaking: Ask students to tell something about a person. Try to use the format and vocabulary in the text. After group discussion (3mins), one student will be asked to talk in class. After the talk, the teacher and Ss are to give some suggestions on his introduction(4mins)

II. Writing: Questions: What type of writing the passage is? How to write a piece of introduction of someone? (2mins) Summarize Ss’s answers: Name, Nationality, Age, Occupation, Education, Dream, Achievement, Hobbies (1min, blackboard)
