time class (人教版) Book9 Unit 2 Sailing the Oceans--- The Greatest Navigational Journey :

A Lesson in Survival Writing: How to Write a Persuasive letter For the passage The Greatest Navigational Journey: A Lesson in Survival, it is the second reading of Unit 2 which belongs to using language part. This passage mainly tells a story of Captain ’s amazing journey of over 40 days through about 4000 miles in an open boat across the Pacific Ocean with his followers after some of the crew took over the ship. Meanwhile, many new words in the passage make it a little difficult for students to read and students also need much background information especially the world-famous mutiny on Bounty(邦帝号哗变) and something about Captain Bligh.. Following this passage, there is a persuasive writing task: to write a letter to your leader explaining to him why you think Captain Bligh should or should not receive the medal.

To finish this writing, students need to be quite familiar with the passage in advance and most importantly, they need to summarize some good aspects of

Captain Bligh such as his leadership qualities, achievement in this journey and his influence on the crew and so on. The above three aspects can serve as forceful reasons to persuade the leader to give him a medal.

They can understand the daily teaching word in class and are equipped with certain reading skill and writing ability but need much guidance and practice to deal with a reading passage and writing.
