I. Lead-in: A song—Welcome to New York 1. Listen to the song at the beginning of the animation Zootopia. What cultural relic can you see in the video clip? (Statue of liberty) 2. What is a cultural relic? Can you give us some examples? (The Great Wall, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Taj Mahal, The Palace Museum, Ming

Dynasty vases, Ivory Dragon Boat, Along the River During the Qingming Festival) What do they have in common? (a long history, rare & unique, well-designed & meaningful, reflect culture…)

3. The definition of a cultural relic:

A cultural relic is something that has survived for a long time, often a part of something old that has remained when the rest of it has been destroyed; it tells people about the past. II. Pre-reading: Make predictions

1. Appreciate pictures of amber and try to summarize features of amber. 2. Take a guess: How much does an amber house cost? Who could be the owner of this amber room?

III. Reading: In Search of the Amber Room Task 1: Fast Reading 1. Skim the passage and complete the following sentences.

(1) In 1716, _____ gave it to Peter the Great. (2) In 1770, the room was completed the way _____ wanted.

From the answers we can know the owner of the amber room must have changed. 2. Go through the text and divide it into three parts. Match each part with its main idea.

We have sites that are similar to those famous around the globe.

2. Critical thinking: Several months ago, for some reason, people built a fake Pyramid in Shijiazhuang. Some people are strongly against the idea because this is an insult(侮辱) to the Pyramids. Others believe it is used to shoot(拍摄) movies so there is nothing serious.

Which opinion do you support? Give your own reasons. 3. Conclusion:Show respect for cultural relics. Balance protection of cultural relics and development of economy. With joint efforts, we will learn from the past and work for a brighter future. V. Homework Write a letter of advice to the local government on at least 3 effective ways of protecting cultural relics.
