The Cat That Vanished Good afternoon ,every leader and teacher. It is my pleasure to be here sharing some of my teaching ideas. The content of my lesson is Reading and vocabulary---The cat that vanished in Module 2 ,Senior Book 6 .I’ll begin this lesson from five parts. Part 1:the understanding of the new standard curriculum and the syllabus .part 2.The analysis of the students. Part 3. the understanding of teaching material . Part 4 The teaching theories, methods and aids. Part 5. Teaching steps.

1.Now,please allow me to introduce :The understanding of the new standard curriculum and the syllabus. the main goal of the new standard curriculum and the syllabus is to develop the students’

ability of autonomic learning and cooperative learning, to form the effective

learning strategy and cultivate comprehensive ability of using the language, form the Intercultural Communicative competence, and to Enhance the spirit of patriotism and national sense of mission. About reading ,according to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus ,the students should have the following reading ability : reading English newspapers or magazines to gain and deal with the main message; reading English original to catch the main plot and know about the main characters; guessing the meaning of new words according to the context. they also should have the good reading habit and great interest in reading. so in senior english teaching, the teacher should encourage the students to form the learning strategy of senior students by active attempt, self-exploration, self-discovery and active practice. to achieve these goals, i have changed my style of teaching---returned the class to the students and let the students control the class. Mentioning the students, i will tell you sth about my students.

2.As to the second part---The analysis of the students

My students have learned English for a few years. They have known some knowledge of english .They can understand the general idea of the story. But it is a little difficult for some of them to find out the key words and topic sentences and master the structure of the story .so in this period, What I should do is to guide them to know the organization of the story and tell them the way to find out the key words and topic sentences. their ability to finish the task--based reading is poor, so i pick out

some sentence patterns to ask them to put forward questions according to the sentence patterns, which can make them know the regular pattern of this task. according to their scores, i divided them into different groups. in each group, there are some students who are better at english. they can help the students who are a little poor at english. according to their performance, give them prize. so they are active in performing and helping each others, which can cultivate their spirit of team work.

3.next ,i will introduce the third part. I divided it into four aspects: they are : The analysis of the teaching material;.

Teaching aims;.

Teaching important points;

Teaching difficult points; Now please let me introduce

A.The analysis of the teaching material.

This period is to introduce an extract----The Cat That Vanished from The Subtle Knife (the second book of His Dark Materials.)His Dark Materials is one of the greatest fantasy stories. it contains three books---northern lights; the subtle knife; the amber spyglass. This extract is about Will and a cat. The cat is a strange creature ,who acts as Will’s guide. She goes to another world through a patch in the air, and Will follows her without hesitation. this lesson plays an important part in the English teaching in this unit. From this lesson, the students can learn what fantasy story is , how to appreciate the beauty of fantasy , imagine the world in the fantasy and compare it with ours to make our world more perfect. As we all know ,reading belongs to the input during the process of the language learning. The input has great effect on output , so if the Ss can learn it well, it will be helpful to make them learn the rest of this unit.

According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus , after studying the reading .they must grasp the following aims.(B.Teaching aim.)

Cognition objectives; Skill objectives; Sensibility objectives

As to Cognition objectives. It contains the key words , phrases and some sentence patterns. i ask them to know the words’ pronunciation and meanings before the class. In this class, i expect them to memorize these new words and phrases by reading the sentences which include them to enlarge their vocabulary. The second is Some key sentence patterns.all these sentences are important sentence patterns in this passage.

Understand these sentence patterns by reading them and putting forward questions

according to these sentences.Encourage them to put forward as many as questions they can .they can use the time ,place, characters, matter and the way to put forward the question. The purpose of putting forward questions is to cultivate their ability of doing task-reading.if they often put forward questions ,they will find out the regular pattern of this task. if they know the pattern ,it is easier for them to find out the answers to the questions in the exam.

After class ,ask them to make up some sentences using these sentence patterns.The purpose of making up sentences is to make the students to master the usage of them. In their writing, they can use some clauses, Independent nominative，Non-finite Verb . As to skill objectives: 1:Enable the students to understand the text organization.2:Enable the students to know how to appreciate fantasy literature. 3.improve their reading ability.

Only when they know the organization of the text can they improve their reading ability. Generally speaking, the topic sentence occurs at the first sentence or the last sentence, so it is important to understand the first and the last sentence. finding out the topic sentences, they can know the organization of the text. After they catch the main idea of the story, they should appreciate its beauty by reading the wonderful sentences and analyzing its characters as well as the relationship between them. by reading, understanding, summarizing and appreciating the passage, they can improve their reading ability.

The last aim is Sensibility objectives

The New standard curriculum and the syllabus demands the teacher cultivates the students’

emotion .so while reading the fantasy story, divide them into different groups, which can increase their interest ,broaden their horizons and arouse their awareness of cooperation. cooperation is very important in our modern society. so it is necessary to teach them know the way of communicating with others and cooperate with others.by learning about the relationship between the characters ,they will learn to love people and our country. C.Teaching important points a:Enable the students to know the structure of the story.

b:Enable the students to know how to appreciate fantasy. reading plays an important

role In the college entrance examination, so the teacher must give the students the reading methods, making the students know how to master the structure of a passage to get more scores in the exam .tell the students to grasp the key words and topic sentences. the more the words occur, the more chance they are the key words. the topic sentences often occur at the beginning or the end of the paragraph. so the students must understand them and then gain the structure. the old saying says: there is a house of gold in the book. so the students should enjoy the story’s beauty, feeling the beautiful sentences and putting themselves into the story. While reading, they consider themselves as the characters to feel the world. only when they involve themselves in the world can they learn more. D. Teaching difficult points:

Teaching difficult point is How to make the students understand the structure of fantasy. if the students can’t master the structure, they can’t understand the passage well, so they must have the skill. they must learn the reading methods, such as: scanning, skimming ,looking for key words and so on. so during each reading class, i ask them to practice these skills. after class ,ask them to use these skills to read more. as the old saying says, practice makes perfect. if they read more, their reading ability will be improved.the new standard curriculum and the syllabus demands the students read more than 36million words,that means the students must read 5 passages each day,so it is necessary and important to read more after class. Part 3 The teaching theories, methods and aids:

I divided the third part into four aspects: they are:

Teaching theories;

Teaching methods;

learning methods;

teaching aids A.

Teaching theories: According to new curriculum standard, i have changed my teaching methods. i teach the students the learning methods. let them teach themselves. My teaching theories is to Return the class to the students. The students are the master of the class. The teacher is the guider. only free people can learn well. so i give them time and chance to improve their learning skill and cooperation skill. B.

Teaching methods

The new curriculum standard requires autonomic learning, only if the students want to study and willing to study can they study well. As the saying says: give a man a fish and you feed him a day. teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime .it is the same with study ,the teacher should teach the students the learning methods besides the knowledge from the book. if they have the ability to teach themselves, they can learn knowledge over their whole life. so i give them the reading strategies and cultivate the ability to obtain and process information. So in this lesson I’ll mainly use communicative approach ,whole language teaching and task-based language teaching

learning methods

scanning skimming careful reading listening writing discussion summary . ask them to practice these methods during their reading.scanning means looking for the key words and topic sentences. while scanning, they should find out the structure of the story.---how many parts can this passage be divided into? If they know the structure ,it will be easier for them to finish the following tasks. specially in task--based reading and choice questions .because they will only read the paragraph which the answers lie in, while skimming, they find out the factors of the story: time, place, characters, plot, ending,put forward some questions according to some sentences from the story and find out the answers to some questions that i give them.In the college entrance examination ,there are task-based reading ,so it is necessary to ask the students to master the tips of finishing this task .the teacher should teach them to pay attention to the key words in each sentence and each question. they must know what they will look for and where they will stop according to the key words. and then know which paragraph they will read carefully. knowing that, they can find out the answer .tell them the more the words occur, the more chance they are the key words. Then careful reading, they will finish Activity 1 on page 16 and Activity 4 on page 17. in the college entrance examination, there are choice questions. so at the first step, i teach them know how to grasp the structure of the passage to finish the task well. to understand the story better, i will play the tape for them and then ask then to complete a summary of the story. The purpose of learning a language is to communicate, so i arranged a task for them

to discuss with their classmate: What would happen to the cat and Will in the new world? they can;t find the answer in the passage, they must use their imagination to talk freely, which can improve their ability of imagination . talking freely gives them more room to cultivate their ability of creation, as the new curriculum standard requires.

The students are asked to write a short passage between 80 words and 100words in the college entrance examination, so if necessary, i will ask them to write sth in class, in this period, there are some nice verbs in the story, which describe some actions. i ask them to use the words to write a short passage to describe how the cat vanished. The purpose of study will lead the students to appreciate the beauty of the fantasy literature besides understanding the words .so i will tell them how to appreciate the beauty.

Part 3. Teaching steps 1. Presentation （3 minutes）

a:showing a picture of Harry Potter, i ask them to look at the picture and tell me what types of literature it is. and then tell them today we are going to learn another fantasy literature.---the cat that vanished. it is written by Philip Pullman. b:Introduce the author—Philip Pullman He is a famous contemporary British writer and Graduated from University of Oxford. Now he specializes in writing. he has written many works, so he has won the UK's top awards for children's literature.2. Task assignment.(2minutes) Ask the students to do scanning, skimming ,careful reading, consolidation, discussion and writing.

Students’ learning.(20minutes)

1)

scanning(5 minutes）ask them to find out the structure of the passage. 2)

Other tasks(15 minutes)

while they are practicing, i walk around the classroom helping them if they meet some question. return the class to the students. they teach themselves ,they can learn more.

4. Students’ performance and the teacher’ correction.(10minutes) After they complete, ask the students to speak out their answers. The teacher correct them if they make some mistakes. after completing the task, they will show themselves and improve themselves by speaking out. 5. Summary.(2minutes)Tell the students the way to appreciate the fantasy. 6. Asking questions.(3minutes)The students ask some questions that they haven’t understood in this period. 7.Homework a:Read the passage aloud. b:Underline the wonderful sentences.Anyway, the teaching of this lesson aims to develop not only the Ss' language

abilities, but also the diverse intelligence by integrated teaching methods and learning methods.As a teacher, to make our English classrooms shine with vitality and meet with the new standard curriculum and the syllabus,we are loaded with a heavy burden, and we still have a long way to go.
