A Sample Teaching Plan for Unit 2

Working the land

Learning about language

Designed by Da Xiaohong

From Gaolan No.1 Middle School Teaching aims: 1. To practise and consolidate the paraphrase strategies. 2. To master a framework of introducing a person. 3. To introduce the framework teaching idea. 4.To cultivate their ability to analyze and summary a passage.

Moral goal: To inspire the students to set their life goals and work hard to chase their dreams. Important points: 1.To practise and consolidate the paraphrase strategies. 2.To form the good habit of thinking in English. Difficult points: 1.To have a better command of retelling a short passage by summarizing, and paraphrasing.

2.To learn how to evaluate people of achievement.

1

Teaching procedures:

Step 1. Leading-in As we all know, paraphrase

and summary are good ways to enlarge our vocabulary and form the good habit of thinking and expressing ourselves in English. Don’t be shy, just try and you’ll be another Li Yang or Zhang Ailing. At first, let’s check the answers to Ex. 1 and Ex.2. Just stand up and show your answers one by one. If you can’t follow, stop me. Are you ready? Let’s go.

Step 2. Practice and consolidation

Ex.1 Try to paraphrase the words below. 1.

Sunburnt: brown skin because of a long time in the strong sunshine without protection, such as sunglasses, sun umbrella, or sun scream, especially in summer. 2.

rid...of: get rid of ,remove, free from/ of

3.

expand: enlarge / become larger in size, number, amount. 4.

circulate:blood circulation means blood moves around within a certain system / our bodies while circulate knowledge means make more people known about it.

2

5.

would rather: prefer / like better / choose this one instead of that one. 6.

struggle: try one’s best, spare no effort.

7.

export: send goods to other countries, send goods

abroad.

8.

be satisfied with: be content with, be pleased with, not disappointed 9.

equip: prepare for a certain purpose. 10.

crops: whatever farmers plant / grow or harvest, output 11.

thanks to: due to, owing to, on account of, as a result of, because of.

12.

build up: enlarge in number , strengthen, set up

Purpose: Ex.1 is designed to consolidate some key words and phrases in this unit.

Ex.2 Try to paraphrase the underlined words and phrases in the sentences below using the new words in this unit, then paraphrase all the sentences. 1.

According to the WHO’s information, (statistics, data, database)about 1.8 million people across the world (globe)die each year from diseases caused by unsafe food and water. The whole sentence means that based on the statistics of the

3

WHO, diseases caused by unsafe food and water lead to / cause about 1.8 million deaths across the globe / throughout the world. OR Based on the statistics of the WHO, about 1.8 million deaths across the globe / throughout the world result from diseases caused by unsafe food and water. 2.

Different kinds of strong (super)corn, another hybrid grain, has been developed by scientists of many different races (nationalities, countries, peoples). The whole sentence means that besides / in addition to / not only super hybrid rice, (but also ) , another kind of hybrid grain, super corn / strong corn, has also been developed by scientists of other countries. 3.

Not having enough food (hunger, food shortage, lack of food )leads to poor health and, therefore, sickness (disease). The whole sentence means that food shortage / lack of food / starvation results in / causes poor health / immune system免疫系统

and , thus diseases. 4.

Over 56 percent of the people in a small Southeast Asian country (Vietnam)are in jobs (occupations)related to agriculture. The whole sentence means that in Vietnam, more than 56 percent Vietnamese are farmers or in occupations related to

4

agriculture. 5.

With the open conditions (freedom)in today’s international business world, hybrid grains can be sold and sent abroad (exported)to countries around the world. The whole sentence means that thanks to the freedom in today’s international business world, hybrid grains can be traded / imported and exported between countries across the globe, Purpose: Ex.2 is to consolidate new words and their usage in the context. Paraphrasing sentences helps to better comprehend long and complex ones to make them easier and simpler.

Ex.3

Summarize and paraphrase Para.2 and Para.3 of CHEMICAL OR ORGANIC FARMING.

What are some of the problems caused by chemical fertilizers? First, they damage the land by killing the helpful bacteria and pests as well as the harmful ones. Chemicals also stay in the ground and underground water for a long time. This affects crops and, therefore, animals and humans, since chemicals get inside the crops and cannot just be washed off. These chemicals in the food supply build up in people’s bodies over time. Many of theses chemicals can lead to cancer or other illness. In addition, fruit, vegetables and other food grown with chemical fertilizers usually grow too fast to be full of much nutrition. They may look

5

beautiful, but inside there is usually more water than vitamins and minerals.

With these discoveries, some farmers and many customers are beginning to turn to organic farming. Organic farming is simply farming without using any chemicals. They focus on keeping their soil rich and free of disease. A healthy soil reduces disease and helps crops grow strong and healthy. Organic farmers, therefore, often prefer using natural waster from animals as fertilizer. They feel that this makes the soil in their fields richer in minerals and so more fertile. This also keeps the air, soil, water and crops free from chemicals.

A possible sample: However, using chemical fertilizers in the long run will damage the land by killing all the bacteria and pests whether they are helpful or harmful.Even worse, using chemical fertilizers also causes damage to people’s health because left chemicals cannot be easily washed off. They will get inside the crops, thus inside the food supply. Over time, chemicals will build up in peoples’ bodies and develop cancer or other illnesses.Thirdly, short growth lessens nutrition since chemical fertilizers help crops grow too fast to contain enough vitamins and minerals. While organic farming makes the soil richer in minerals and more fertile, keeping the air, soil, water and crops free from chemicals. Purpose:

Ex.3 is to show the students how to paraphrase a

6

paragraph using other structures and some clauses.

A pattern of one phenomenon superior to the other:

A typical 3-paragraph structure

Para.1 a brief introduction of a phenomenon Para.2 the problems caused by the former and the benefits of the latter Para.3 a call for the latter and an inversion structure-- Only in this way will we / can we... A good example is Plastic Or Cloth Bags.

Step 3. Representation

Ex.4

7

Maybe, from a very young age, he set his life goal to increase crop production / harvest / output. In 1953, he graduated from Southwest Agricultural College . Since then , he has devoted himself to searching for a way to increase rice harvests without expanding

the area of the fields. In 1973, twenty years after his graduation, he developed super hybrid rice which produces 20% more than normal rice. But as always, he continues his research and donates millions of money to equip young agricultural scientists at home and abroad. It’s a long way to win the battle against hunger, so his goal is to export his super hybrid to be grown / planted across the globe.
