StepⅠDiscovering useful structures There are two steps in this step. One is to revise the usage of the -ing form which the students have learned in Unit 2. The other one is to learn the new usage of the -ing form. Task 1 Revision T: Now let’s have a revision about the -ing form used as the subject and the object. Here are some sentences for you to translate. 1. Talking to him is talking to a wall.

2. Smoking may cause cancer. 3. Walking is my sole exercise. 4. Talking mends no holes. 5. I suggested bringing the meeting to an end. 6. He admitted taking the money. 7. I couldn’t help laughing.

8. Your coat needs brushing. Suggested translation: 1. 和他说话等于对牛弹琴。

2. 吸烟会致癌。

3. 散步是我唯一的运动。

4.（谚）空谈无济于事。

5. 我建议结束会议。

6. 他承认钱是他拿的。

7. 我禁不住笑了起来。

8. 你的大衣需要刷一下了。

一、动词-ing形式(短语)作表语

★一些表示状态、品质、情绪的动词-ing形式可作表语。如：

It’s amazing that you should know that!

The test results have been very discouraging. The reason he gave was not very convincing. The photograph is missing. ★动词-ing形式(短语)作表语，有时说明主语的内容。如：

Henry’s job is teaching physics in a local middle school.

My brother’s favorite activity is hiking.

注意: 当动词-ing形式(短语)表示经常性的动作时，可以和主语互换位置。如：

Mr. Wang’s favorite exercise is running around the block.

= Running around the block is Mr. Wang’s favorite exercise.

二、动词-ing形式(短语)作宾语补足语

★动词-ing形式(短语)作宾语补足语，强调宾语发出的动作正在进行。后可跟动词-ing形式(短语)作宾语补足语的动词有set, catch, find, have, keep, get, leave, make, feel, see, hear, notice, observe, watch等。如：

When I entered the room, I saw the children jumping on the bed. I heard them singing that nice English song. 注意: 动词-ing形式(短语)作宾语补足语时句子可以变为被动语态。如：

The teacher caught John cheating in the last exam. →John was caught cheating in the last exam.

His parents found his progress very satisfying. →His progress is found very satisfying.

★介词with后也可接动词-ing形式(短语)作宾语补足语，此时with后的宾语是动词-ing形式(短语)所表示的动作的发出者。如：

With a native villager acting as our guide, we had no trouble getting around. I can’t do my homework with all this noise going on. 【即学即练】

选用方框内合适的动词并用其正确形式完成下面对话（每个动词限用一次）。
