The General Idea of This Period This period is about the useful words ,expressions and structures learned in the reading part ,from the exercises in this period ,the students can consolidate what they learnt in the reading part, and learn the grammar about the -ing form as a noun.

Since then, finding ways to grow more rice has been his life goal. As a young man, he saw the great need for increasing to the rice output.

Yuan Longping searched for a way to increase rice harvests without expanding the area of the field. He enjoys listening to violin music, playing mah-jong, swimming and reading. Spending money on himself or leading a comfortable life also means very little to him. Just dreaming for things, however, costs nothing.

He awoke from his dream with the hope of producing a kind of rice that could feed more people. Process and Strategies

Step 1 Revision

1. Greetings.

2. Ask the students to use the first person to retell the passage about Dr Yuan,and ask them to try to use the proper conjunctions.

Step 2 Useful words and expressions

T: From the reading part, we can find some useful words and expressions. They can be divided into 3 groups (noun, adjective and verb) Read them together.

Now please find the words and expressions for each of these meanings.(Ex.1 on Page 12)

After two minutes, the teacher begins to check the answers and give the right answers:

T: Let’s come to discovering useful structures, at first, find and underline the sentences in the passage that use –ing forms as either subject or the object. Then choose the sentences that use –ing forms as either subject or the object. What have you discovered?

T: Very good! V-ing form can be used as the subject, and it can have its own object or/ and adverbial. Now, let’s look at these sentences and explore more.

T: Very good! Now please rewrite the sentences in Ex.2 on Page 13.

After five minutes, the teacher checks the answers. (Ss answer the questions one by one.)

T: Do you think it’s very easy to learn about the -ing form as the subject? But how about the -ing form as the object? Now please read the sentences and try to find some rules. S: V-ing can be used as the object both of verb and preposition. T: A good job! Another groups of sentences for you, read carefully, what have you found? S: suggest/ avoid/ admit doing; agree/ pretend/ offer to do. T; Wonderful! So we can draw a conclusion that some verbs are followed by –ing as their object, some verbs are followed by infinitive as their object. Now let’s summarize these verbs. Verbs with –ing form as their object: admit, advise,

appreciate, avoid, complete, consider, delay, deny, enjoy, escape, finish, imagine, keep, mind, miss, practice, quit, suggest, stop, can’t stand, can’t help, be worth

Verbs with the infinitive as their object:

afford, agree, arrange, choose, decide, hope, expect, offer, plan, promise, determine, demand, manage, fail, prepare, refuse, pretend, seem T: Great! Let’s read, compare these three pairs of sentences, what can you get? (Show sentences on the screen) S: They have different meanings. T; Pretty good! Another pairs, what have you found? (Show sentences on the screen) S: They have slightly different meanings. T: Very good! Last pairs, we can see that…

S: start/begin/continue to do and start/begin/continue doing have the same meaning. T: Perfect! Let’s come to Exercise 4 on page 13, you can finish it by yourselves, of course, you can discuss with your partners. After five minutes, the teacher checks the answers.

T: Today, we are going to learn the v.-ing as a noun. So at first who can tell me what a noun can be used as in a sentence? And please give me some examples.

S : It can be used as subject. For example: Smoking is harmful to our health.

T: Now I think you have known how to use the v.-ing as subject. But how about others ?

S : It can also be used as object. For example: I have forgotten seeing this film.T: You are right. The v.-ing form can be used as object, too.

T: Very good.(The teacher may give a systematical explanation of the grammar.)Step 5 Homework
