Grammar: Predicate Verbs

Teaching Objectives:

At the end of this class, students will have learnt to: 1.identify all kinds of predicate verbs in the sentences. 2.know how to use five sentence structures and use correct predicate

verbs. 3. identify predicate verbs and non-predicate verbs. 4.use some practical solutions to deal with all kinds of exercises concerning predicate verbs and non-predicate verbs. 5. use correct predicate verbs in writing. 6.translate sentences using predicate verbs and non-predicate verbs. 7.express themselves freely using predicate verbs and non-predicate verbs. 8.know we should have an active and positive attitude towards life no matter what happens in the future.

Show students a video about TED SPEECH, which is mainly about how to have an active attitude towards life.

The intention of designing this part:

1.learning grammar is somewhat boring, while a video can help. 2.The students are facing College Entrance Examination, they need courage and active attitude to face everything they will encounter and they can learn something in the video. 3.The imply of the language is in need. Step 2

Leading in and presentation

Give an exercise about gap filling(national cloze) which is about all kinds of predicate verbs and of course some non-predicate verbs included. The intention of designing this part:

This part is the preparation of next part about classification of predicate verbs and how to deal with the exercise concerning predicate verbs.

Step 3

Classification of the predicate verbs and five sentence structures

Ask students to classify predicate verbs and identify five sentence structures.

Step 4

Approaches to dealing with exercises about predicate verbs During this part , ask some individuals to say something about their solutions according to what they filled in the gaps and their previous

knowledge on predicate verbs and non-predicate verbs.

Step 5

Translation in different ways

Translate sentences according to the pictures in different ways.

The intention of designing this part:

The exercises in the part are concerning all kinds of things that students should pay more attention to when dealing with exercises about predicate verbs . Step 6 Notional Cloze (gap filling)

Select some exercises in college entrance examinations for students to practise, for they are Senior Three

students.

I wrote a passage according to what I think are the most important verb phrases in my teaching career.

The intention of designing this part:

I select some important verbs and verb phrases to make up a short passage for the students to translate, for I think in this passage , they can translate sentences in different ways using both predicate verbs and non-predicate verbs. In addition, I translate the passage in my way for the students to refer to.

Teaching Reflection Predicate verbs are very significant for the students to master and use, for which are the most important part for English learners .This period of lesson actually should be a revision, because the students have learnt so much about verbs. I think they did good jobs.
