Unit 4 Wildlife Protection

Reading：How Daisy Learned to Help Wildlife By Zheng Nazhi Step 1: Lead-in

Task 1: Talking about wildlife while enjoying pictures Show some familiar pictures of wildlife and ask students to say something about them.

Draw students’ attention to the wildlife, and bring the topic: wildlife.

Show pictures of hunting and so on to raise their emotions to protect them. Purpose：To draw students’ attention to the topic and feel the beauty and charm of wildlife, to raise their emotions to protect them as well as to enliven the atmosphere of the class.

Task 2: Listening

Show a video of wildlife protection, and bring questions about: What happened to the wildlife? What can we do to help wildlife? 1

Purpose: To train students’ listening ability and help students get some background knowledge about wildlife protection and pave the way for the speaking in the post reading.

III: Careful Reading Let’s travel with Daisy and see what happened. First visit: (Paragraph 1)the need of wildlife protection 1. How did the antelope feel in Tibet?

Elephants used to be an endangered species. Famers hunted them without mercy. They said elephants destroyed their farms, and money from tourists only went to the large tour companies. So the government allowed tourists to hunt only a certain number of animals if they paid the farmers. Now the farmers are happy and the numbers of elephants are increasing.

Purpose: To train students’ ability of getting information through listening and the ability of taking notes while listening. Third visit: (Paragraph 3&4)the benefit of wildlife protection 1. What was the monkey doing? Why did it do so? It is rubbing a millipede insect over its body because it contains a powerful drug which affects mosquitoes. 2. What does the monkey mean by saying “No rainforest, no animals, no drugs”?

It means only when we protect the rainforest, can we protect the animals; only when we protect animals, can we get drugs. Summary: Daisy met some animals in her dream, which makes her learn about the need and benefit of wildlife protection as well as a good example of it. Purpose: To train students’ ability of summarizing and inferring information.

IV. Retelling Ask students to retell the text with the help of some tips. Purpose: To

help students to have a whole picture of the text and train students’ ability of retelling a story. Step 3: Post reading Q: It can be inferred from the text that next Daisy would ________.
