ENGLISH JOKES Teaching aims: 1.

To read and enjoy some English jokes and funny stories.. 2.

To improve Ss’ reading abilities. Teaching important points: 1.

To understand the jokes and funny stories occurring in the textbook.

2.

To learn some technique of doing exes.

Teaching procedures: Step1:Warming-up Read the two jokes given below and find the humour hidden in them. Joke 1:

Good use of cry The parents with their three-year -old son went to the cinema to watch a movie. When they walked into the cinema, the waiter told them that they could not go out even if their son cried unless they were willing to pay for their tickets a second time.Half an hour later ,they both found it rather boring .Therefore, they made up their mind to end what they were doing and waked up their son in order that he would cry and require them to go out. Joke 2: Three whistles I promised my girlfriend a gold necklace for her birthday. However, when the shop assistant showed us its price, I let out a long and low whistle. I pointed to another necklace.She said with certainty that I would let out three whistles. Step2:Playing on words 1 Customer:What is that fly doing in my soup?

Waiter:Swimming, I think. 2:Customer: What is that?

Waiter :It’s bean soup.

Customer: I do not want to know what it’s been, I want to know what it is now. 3:Customer: Waiter, will the pancakes be long?

Waiter: No, sir,.Round. Explanation: A

The first person is asking for information about time. The second person treats it as a question about shape. B

The first person is angry about something and wants to say, “Why is it here?” The second person treats it as a request for information and gives an answer to the question. C：

The answer to the question contains a word which, when spoken, can have two meanings.

Ask Ss to read the three jokes and match them with the right choice. What I want to stress is that we can match the first joke with its explanation because of the key words “a word which, when spoken, can have two meanings”.Then we can choose B for the first one now that it is relatively easy. Step3: Reading Some jokes are short while others are long.Here are a long funny story about the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Doctor Watson.Read it and answer the following questions. 1.

What question did Sherlock Holmes put forward? 2.

What were Watson’s answers? Time permitting, ask Ss to act it out. Step4: Homework 1.
