in advertising industry. II. The analysis of teaching material

The teaching material is the warming up and reading part from NEW SENIOR ENGLISH FOR CHINA STUDENT’S BOOK 9, UNIT 5, warming up and reading. The topic of this unit is inside advertising. What this part presents us is the subject of advertisements, which is closely related to our daily life. The students show great interest in the topic, so the teacher can make the best of the chance to motivate their

identifying, talking, thinking, and retelling abilities. III. The analysis of learning condition

The students are from grade 3 in senior high school. As high school students, they have achieved certain English level and they have the ability to use reading strategies to do the reading task . Since they are in grade 3, they are easily activated and want to air their own opinions on the topic. They are unfamiliar with the topic of how advertising works. But they may like to talk about the subject which is close to themselves and play a role of a customer and an advertiser. Moreover, their vocabulary is limited so there is a word competition in the class. IV. Learning objectives

1. Language skills

At the beginning of the class, students may enjoy some pictures and a video based on the title.

Students can scan the passage and find out the specific information such as what is an advertisement , and how to make one. 2. Language knowledge

Students can master the key words and phrases of advertiser, appeal to, inform, visual, associated, worthy, trustworthy, offending, technique, feature and budget.

3.Effects

Students will realize that the importance and the effect of advertisements and they will concern themselves with the issue of identifying the advertisements. 4. Cultural awareness

Students will be aware of the advertising industry by knowing how powerful it is and think it over to identify the truth and validity. 5. Learning strategies

Students will cultivate their ability in individual learning and cooperative learning by doing some activities independently and some in groups.

Students will communicate with each other in English while doing the group work.

V. Language focuses and difficulties

1. Language focuses

This is a

warming up and reading period so the focus is to cultivate the students’

reading skills and practice expressing. Many activities are designed to help students to train their reading skills, such as skimming, scanning and careful reading. It is also important for the students to master the words and phrases they have learned.

Language difficulties

As the students have seldom seen dialects appeared in the reading passage so they may have some difficulties in understanding the passage. So the teacher will help them transform them into formal ones.

VI. Teaching method

Three-stage model: Based on the understanding of reading as an interactive process, teaching reading in the classroom is divided into three stages in which the top-down and bottom-up techniques integrated to develop the students language efficiency in general and reading strategies.

VII. Teaching aids

Multimedia devices and PPT documents: In order to help students to fully understand the whole passage, I adopt Multimedia devices and PPT documents to bring the real-life situation into the classroom.

VIII. Teaching procedures

Step1. Reading

Activity1. Greetings and Free-talking

T Leads into the topic by enjoying a short video.

T: Hello boys and girls. (Students say hello to the teacher.) When facing difficulties in life, what will you do? (Students’ answer may vary.)I’ll introduce a friend to you. You may know him. Let’s have a look. What did you see in the video and how do you feel after seeing the video? (Students’ answer may vary.) I am also deeply impressed by what the man has achieved in spite of his disability. Dear students, you never know what you can achieve unless you try your best. So come on, I’m backing you up.

T: Yesterday, we talked about a girl who was healthy but led a miserable life. Who is she? (Students answer: Eliza. She is the girl who makes a living by selling flowers )

T: We know from our last lesson that the poor girl Eliza met professor Higgins, who wanted to change her social status and conditions by teaching her authentic English. And Eliza gladly thanked him and promised to meet him the next day. ?
