Senior Book1 Unit5 Nelson Mandela--a Modern Hero 苏静美

Gongyi No.2 Senior High School

The Analysis of Learning Material

The main topic of this unit is the story of Nelson Mandela and other heroes in human history. As the first period of the unit, it is aimed to arouse the students’ interest in the main topic and prepare for the coming several periods.

The Analysis of Students

I’m sure the students will love the topic very much. At the same time, they have learned some words and expressions about this unit. However, expressing themselves in spoken English and writing are always the weaknesses of Senior Grade 1 students. So based on my students’

learning ability, the learning objectives are set as follows.

Learning objectives At the end of the class, students are able to achieve the following objectives:

1.

Knowledge objectives Learn and use some words and expressions freely in this part: diligent, never lose heart, hardworking, determined, selfless, optimistic, persistent, etc.

2.

Ability objectives

Improve the ability to speak and write in describing a person with newly learnt words and expressions.

3.

Emotional objectives

Work hard inspiringly and develop good qualities by learning from great people and talking about heroes/heroines in their heart. Basis of objectives: Vocabulary required in syllabus to describe people.

Key points 1.

Master some useful words and phrases to describe a person. 2.

Know about the qualities of great people. Difficult points 1.

Idea and strategy According to the characteristics of the Grade One students and requirements of the syllabus, I designed some exercises to enable students to listen, speak, read and write as often as possible. I adopted the strategies of speaking and writing to enable them to describe great people properly in English.

Learning methods: Task-based teaching and learning & Cooperative learning

Learning aids:

Multi-media, Computer, and Projector.

Learning procedures

Step 1 Lead-in 1.

Enjoy a song “Glorious years” from BEYOND and ask them two questions

1)

Who is “he” here in the song?

2)

What is the relationship between Mandela and the song? 2.

Understand the lyrics and focus on the words in red and blue. 3.

Present more details about Mandela. [Design intention]

This part is designed to draw students’

attention and arouse students’

interest in Mandela, and then learn more details about him by exploring the meanings behind the song together and appreciating pictures.. Step2 Guess game & Discussion

Activity 1---Guess who he/she is. 1.

He is a famous singer in Taiwan, who has small eyes. He is quite good at singing in a low and unclear way and most of us can't distinguish what he is singing. His English name begins with J. 2.

He, born in 1978, is a professional basketball player. He once played in NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers guard and retired in 2016. 3.
