Teaching Design Grammar--- Past Simple and Present Perfect Section I Analysis of the teaching material The content of my lesson is taken from
New Senior English for China Students’ Book 2, Unit 3. The grammar structure in this unit is the Present Perfect Passive Voice, which is actually not difficult for our students. So as an expansion of this grammar point,
the differences between Present Perfect and Past Simple, which usually confuse a lot of students in high school, are stressed in this period, Therefore, this lesson is of practical use. Section II: Analysis of students’ need
Although students have learned the Present Perfect Simple and Past Simple tenses in junior middle school, they still can’t distinguish the two tenses in practical use. So it is necessary to design such a lesson for students to figure out how to correctly use the two easily-confused tenses. Section III Teaching objectives
1. Knowledge and ability objectives
After learning, the students should be able to know when to use Present Perfect and when to use Past Simple.
The students should be able to distinguish the two tenses in practical use.
Students are to improve their listening skills through listening tasks. 2. Emotional objectives
Students are guided to understand that the best way to examine whether you have acquired some knowledge is to practice.
Section IV Important and difficult points The most important point of this lesson is for students to figure out the differences between the two tenses, which is also the most difficult point.
Section V Teaching procedure I. Game activity Students are aroused to play a game called “Tell the truth”. The teacher has prepared six questions in which Present Perfect and Past Simple are both concerned. Students are lead to answer the questions by using the two tenses, during which they use and experience the differences of the two tenses. 1.
Did you cheat in this week’s dictation?
2.
Did you listen carefully in today’s math class?
3.
Did you play the game “King of Glory” last weekend?
4.
Have you ever escaped school? 5.
Have you ever lied to your head teacher Mr. Wang? 6.
Have you ever had any problems fitting in your class? Purpose: To involve the students to use the two verb tenses in authentic context so that they will naturally acquire the use because these two grammar points are not new to them II. Language review Since the two tenses are not new to the students and just now in the game the students have experienced a bit, now they are to summarize the grammar points. 1.
If we say exactly when the action happened, and it is completed in the past, we use the past simple. 2.
If an action began in the past and continues in the present, we use present perfect. 3.
If the results of the past action are important in the present, we use present perfect. III. Practice In this practice section, students are to match the sentences in column A with the part in column B. In order to do the matching practice, students need to know some
background information about several famous people, which is also a special part of this lesson. Some photos are use here. IV. listening task The listening task is another challenging practice for students to consolidate the focus of this lesson, namely the differences between Present Perfect and Past Simple. 1. Students are going to hear five dialogues and listening to what the people are talking about and then match a dialogue with a picture. 2. Then the students are to fill in the gaps with a verb in the box. 3. After that, the students will listen to the materials again to check their answers. 4. When students are confused about what they have written down and what they hear about, the teacher introduce a listening term which is called the contraction--- a shortened form of a word. 5. Students get to know the pronunciation rules. a. “Have” is strong if it stands alone without a main verb.
b. “Have” is weak in the question form.
V. Conclusion
Students are asked to summarize the key points in this period. The first one is about the differences between present perfect and past simple. Besides, they also learn about some phonetic rules in listening. VI. Homework Students are required to write a short passage titled “An unforgettable experience” within about 120 words. They are required to include two points. 1. their unforgettable experience 2. the influence it has on them They may add some details if necessary.
