Paris
The ranking for the “most romantic city” quite rightly leads to Paris. The city of light has long been famous as a city of love. This is definitely the best place for love, wine and food. Prague is called the heart of Europe. The city, dating from the 9th century, is indeed a real architectural wonder. Prague’s famous castle is the largest ancient castle in the world, built early in 1257. For a more romantic experience, take your loved ones to the top of the 60-foot observatory and watch the slow sunset over Prague.
Maldives
There are quiet islands, warm, clear water with excellent visibility, a huge amount of reefs and an incredible diversity of marine life. The Maldives is the place to shoot all those beautiful postcard pictures of couples on a desert beach. Most islands are not more than 1 km in area, which makes them particularly suitable for privacy, honeymoons and love.

UNITED STATES: Air crews searched through Thursday night for missing US adventurer Steve Fossett on a task they compared to looking for a needle in a haystack in the vast Nevada desert. Four days after Fossett’s plane disappeared, authorities dramatically increased the search area to 26000 sq/km from on an original 1600 sq.km. But they said it could take two weeks or more to find the 63-year-old millionaire who disappeared on Monday.
Major Cynthia Ryan said daytime ground patrols (巡逻队) of the mountains and a search of western Nevada’s Walker Lake have been added, and the air search was extended into California’s mountain border. “Trying to make that needle stand out in a haystack that big is going to be a real challenge and is going to be discouraging for people who were hoping for results early on,” Ryan told a news conference.
Steve Fossett disappeared while he was out searching dry lake beds for a planned attempt to set a land speed record. Nothing has been heard from a fine watch that Fossett is known to wear that is designed to let pilots signal their location in an emergency.
More than 12 planes took off at dawn on Thursday to search the Nevada desert, whose mountains
17
rise up to 3000 meters and are buffeted by heavy cross winds. Searchers are using several types of planes, including some with imaging technology that quickly distinguishes man-made objects, including air-craft wreckage, from natural objects.
28.Who is the man named Steve Fossett in the passage?
A.A rich young man who like to risk.
B.A young millionaire that love to venture.
C.An old adventurer who is rich.
D.An old man that enjoys walking.
29.We can infer from the underlined part “looking for a needle in a haystack”
in the first paragraph that
.
A.it is easy to find Steve Fosset
B.it is difficult to find Steve Fossett
C.it is not clear whether they could find Fossett
D.it is obvious that they could find Fossett 30. The reason why Fossett disappeared was that
.
A.the plane he was on for business fell down from the sky
B.he forced the pilot of the plane to fall down to the ground
C.he was not careful enough in piloting his own plane
D.he wanted to set a record of landing by driving a plane 31.The underlined word “buffeted” may have the closest meaning to
.
A.beaten softly
B.attacked violently
C.flowed quickly
D.blown normally
D Daniel Anderson, a famous psychologist, believes it’s important to distinguish television’s influences on children from those of the family. We tend to blame TV, he says, for problems it doesn’t really cause, overlooking our own roles in shaping children’s minds.
One traditional belief about television is that it reduces a child’s ability to think and to understand the world. While watching TV, children do not merely absorb words and images. Instead, they learn both explicit and hidden meanings from what they see. Actually, children learn early the
18
psychology of characters in TV shows. Furthermore, as many teachers agree, children understand far more when parents watch TV with them, explaining new words and ideas. Yet, most parents use an educational program as a chance to park their kids in front of the set and do something in another room.
Another argument against television is that it replaces reading as a form of entertainment. But according to Anderson, the amount of time spent watching television is not related to reading ability. TV doesn’t take the place of reading for most children; it takes the place of similar sorts of recreation, such as listening to the radio and playing sports. Things like parents’ educational background have a stronger influence on a child’s reading. “A child’s reading ability is best predicted by how much a parent reads.” Anderson says.
Traditional wisdom also has it that heavy television-watching lowers IQ scores and affects school performance. But here, too, Anderson notes that no studies have proved it. In fact, research suggests that it’s the other way around. “If you’re smart young, you’ll watch less TV when you’re older,” Anderson says. Yet, people of lower IQ tend to be lifelong television viewers.
For years researchers have attempted to show that television is dangerous to children. However, by showing that television promotes none of the dangerous effects as conventionally believed, Anderson suggests that television cannot be condemned without considering other influences. 32. By watching TV, children learn _________.
A. images through words
B. more than explicit meanings
C. more about images than words
D. little about people’s psychology
33. Which of the following is most related to children’s reading ability?
A. Radio-listening
B. Television-watching D. Parents’ educational background
C. Parents’ reading list
34. Anderson believed that _________.
A. the more a child watches TV, the smarter he is
B. the younger a child is, the more he watches TV
C. the smarter a child is, the less likely he gets addicted to TV
D. the less a child watches TV, the better he performs at school
19
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To advise on the educational use of TV.
B. To describe TV’s harmful effects on children.
C. To explain traditional views on TV influences.
D. To present Anderson’s unconventional ideas.
第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Ways to Save Time
We all wish we had just a bit more time. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, or spring-clean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on.
36
But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter. Get Out of Bed Earlier
If you normally get up at 7: 30 a. m. , try getting up at 7: 00 a. m. That half-hour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish.
37
Do the Important Tasks First
Once you get to work, get the important ones done first(not the easy ones, or even the urgent ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all those little urgent ones.
38
The urgent tasks will still get done, and you won’t miss the important ones. Reduce Interruptions
If colleagues have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple task like writing a letter. Constant interruptions don’t just eat up time, they also break your concentration.
When you’ve got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voice
mail.
39
Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to strike up a conversation.
40
20
A few minutes chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day.
When you’re working, work. If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break: go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit. And if you’re facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that it’s easier to deal with.
A. Take Breaks When Necessary
B. Stay Focused on Your Work
C. If you work like this, you’ll usually save time.
D. If you have an office door, close it.
E. I can’t magically make all your days 25 hours long.
F. Or simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start.
G. Would you want me to make your day longer?

Dear Wang Hui,
I am very sorry to hear that you are suffering in your studies. I would like to share some advice with you on how to study efficiently. Firstly, you can talk with some close friends about your problems and ask for their help. This is an important way to deal with your problems directly. Secondly, try to study in a positive way, which will decrease your study pressure, making studying an easier job. Third, spend time taking exercise. Not only does exercise build up our body, but also it provides time for us to refresh our mind. Last, you can listen to some music, which will be a good way to improve your current depressed mood. I hope all this information can benefit you.
Yours,
Li hua
