By reading they will realize the role that agriculture plays in human life. In fact this world faces a serious problem—starvation. So after reading the passage about Dr Yuan students will know the importance of his achievement to man. Of course they will learn from Dr Yuan some noble character. 3.

Teaching procedure and ways

Step 1 Lead - in T: As we know, 75% of the surface on the earth is covered by water. The land is very limited. With the development of city, more buildings and factories have been set up. As a result, a lot of land have been taken up. Do you think the land is very important to us? Ss: Yes, it can provide us with food and vegetables to live. T: Do you think the land is facing many problems?

Ss: Yes, the land are becoming desert.

The soil is washed away when it rains. T: The land is becoming more and more limited. China is one of the biggest agriculture countries in the world. China has a long history in developing agricultural technology. Chinese are the earliest to grow wheat in the world. So the land is very important to us.

In Unit 2, we are going to learn something about agriculture.

Step 2 Warming up 1.

Have you ever been to the countryside? Who did you see or do there? Ss: Yes, we can see lots of wheat, cole and apples there. We do farmwork, remove grass, water the crop, fertilize the soil, plough the soil, get in wheat and pick apples.

Are you from a farmer's family? What do you know about farming? Ss: Yes, farming is very important to us, what we eat and wear is all from this. 3.

Have you ever grown any plants? If so, what did you do to grow them? If not, what plant would like to try? Ss: Yes, bury the seeds in the soil, water and fertilize them, remove the weeds etc. T: Do you think everyone gets enough food every day? A number of children get hungry every day in the Africa. So we should improve production but how? In reading, we are going to talk about this problem.

Step 3 Pre-reading

Read the statistics below. Did you know these facts before? What problem do they show? Ss: No. It's unfair. Some people in developed countries get enough food, while some ones in developing countries do not. Some people waste food. 2.

What do you think would happen if tomorrow there was suddenly no rice to eat? Ss: People can eat other food such as wheat, corn, noodles, potatoes, bread.

Predict the main idea of the passage. Ss: a. How did Dr Yuan become famous?

b. How did Dr Yuan develop hybrid rice?

c. The achievements and dream of Dr Yuan.

Step 4 Reading Listen the the text and try to find the main idea of each paragraph. Para1 Dr Yuan's appearance and achievements. Q: What's his appearance?

Sunburnt face and arms; slim, strong body; more like a farmer than a scientist. Q: What're his achievements?

He grows what is called super hybrid rice, which makes it possible to produce one-third more of the crop in the same fields. Para2 Dr Yuan's brief life experience/ biography. He was born into a poor farmer's family . In 1950,Chinese farmers produced 5.5 billion tons of rice.

He graduated from Southwest Agriculture college in 1953. He searched a way to increase rice outputs without expanding the area of fields. 20 billon tons of rice was produced by growing his hybrid rice. He helps rid the world of hunger by circulating his knowledge in less developed

countries. Para 3 Dr Yuan's personality

He cares little about money and fame（名声）.

He would rather work than lead a comfortable life.

He enjoys a simpler life than most rich and famous people. Q: What is he satisfied with? What doesn't care about? How did he feel about that?

What does he rather do? What does he enjoy?

What means very little to him?

What does he believe? What does he therefore? Para 4 Dr Yuan's dreams

Q: What does“Wishing for things, however, costs nothing.”mean?

Dreams are free and everybody can have ideas about what they would like their

future life to be. Q: What did Dr Yuan’s rice look like in his dream?

The rice plants were as tall as sorghum.Each ear of rice was as big as an ear of

corn and each grain of rice was as huge as a peanut. Q: What's another dream?

To export his rice so that it can be grown around the globe.

Step 5 Post-reading At first, let students listen to the tape, and then finish the exercise in Comprehending, we have involved some questions in Exercise 3, so teacher can choose some questions to do. For Ex 1 and 2, teacher can leave some time for students to finish and then check the answers with the whole class.

Step 6 Summary and Homework T: Today we talked about agriculture. And we also read about Dr Yuan Longping. We have known much about the great scientist. Of course we have learned some words and expressions about farming. Please try to grasp these words and expressions after class. Now please look at the poem on the screen:

Farmers weeding at noon,

Sweat down the field soon.

Who knows food on a tray,

Due to their toiling day? T: Do you know it? Read it and say what does it mean? Ss: Of course. It’s 悯农(min nong) written by Li Shen(李绅). T: Right. The title is A HARD - WORKING FARMER. This is my gift to you. Please read it together. OK, hope you can remember it when you are having your dinners. Besides, I’d like you to think: even if Dr Yuan’s dreams come true, can this really solve the starvation? Why? This is the homework. Think it over. Next time I’ll ask
