Lead-in T: Good morning, boys and girls. We always say, “We must respect facts and can’t wholly depend on one’s opinions”. But can you tell me: Q1:What does it mean when you say, “It is a fact”? Q2:What does it mean when you say, “It is an opinion”? Keys for reference:

A.

A fact must be real, objective and without any personal judgment. So it can be proved.

B. An option always expresses one’s own ideas. It is always subjunctive. So it has not been proved. Step 2 Pre-reading T: Please take out your textbook and then turn to page 5, look at the title of this passage, then try to guess what it is about. Step 3 While-reading 1.

Fast-reading Ask students to listen to the tape, and see if their guessing are right.

Then think about “what a fact is ” and “what an opinion is” according to the passage. 2.

Careful-reading ①

Ask atudents to read the passage again, and try to translate these sentences into Chinese. 

A fact is anything that can be proved. 

An opinion is what someone believes is true but has not been proved. .... ②

Scanning: read the passage again, answer the following questions. 

If you want to go in for law against somebody, and if you want to win,

what’s the most important thing you should do first?

(Searching for facts. The more, the better.) 

What makes a judge decide which eyewitness he can believe and which not? (The evidences offered by the eyewitnesses.) Step 4 Post-reading Ask students to read the second passsage on page 5, then try to fill the table(P5). Step 5 Listening Finish the listening tasks on page 5. Step 6 Speaking 1.

Group work ①

We often use some expressions to ask for opinions. What are they?

What do you think of ...?

Do you believe ... ?

How do you feel about ...?

What are your reasons for saying that?

Who do you think was...?

②

We often use some expressions to give opinions. What are they?

I think /don’t think that...

Sorry, I agree/don't agree that ...

I suppose that ...

It can be proved.

I don’t believe ... because ...

2.

Individual work. Sometimes we may fall into or face a moral choice. That is a moral dilemma. Let’s read the letter (P7) and see what's Johann’s choice and opinion. Answer the following questions. 

Who do you think the Amber Room belongs to? 

What should you do with things you have found even if the search cost you time and money? 

Do you agree with Johann? Step 7 Debate Read the following tips for organizing an informal class debate(on page 7). Then have a class debate and take notes of the main ideas of the two sides and their reasons. At the end take a class vote. Topic: Should students should bring their mobile phones to school ? Step 8 Writing Write a report on your debate, using the following guidance. Paragraph 1: State the question. Paragraph 2: Give the ideas that agree with the questions and the reasons. Paragraph 3: Give the ideas that disagree with the questions and the reasons.
