What is a profile? A brief account of someone's salient characteristics and deeds.
Now you are going to write a profile for a magazine about a person who has broken a record.
Liu Xiang (Simplified Chinese: 刘翔, pinyin: Liú Xiáng) (born July 13, 1983 in Shanghai, China) is a hurdling athlete.
In 2002, Liu launched his career in fine style by winning the first IAAF Grand Prix in Lausanne with a world youth and Asian record time of 13.12 seconds in the 110 metres hurdles.
He has since made the finals at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics and IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics (twice); two of the three cases have seen American hurdling great Allen Johnson take the major prize, but in the last in May at Osaka, Liu managed to beat Johnson with an Asian-record time of 13.06 seconds.
Still young, Liu has improved steadily, and won a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the 110 meters hurdles event. In the final, he equaled the world record of 12.91 seconds held since 1993 by Colin Jackson of Wales. This is the first time an athlete of non-African descent has dipped under 13 seconds for the 110 meter hurdles. Name: Liu Xiang Date of Birth: July 13, 1983 Country: China Achievements: won a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the 110 meters hurdles event V. Closing down by learning about Olympics Olympic Flag The flag of the Olympic Games has five interlocking rings (blue, yellow, black, green, and red) on a white ground.
The rings represent the five parts of the world that were joined together in the Olympic movement: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe.
The Ancient Olympics: The ancient Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC, and featured only one event.
Every four years, for 1,170 years, the Greeks held an Olympics, which continued to grow and change.
The Olympics Torch: For each Olympics, a new flame is started in the ancient Olympic stadium in Olympia, Greece, using a parabolic mirror to focus the rays of the Sun. This flame begins its Olympic Torch Relay by touring Greece. The flame is then taken to the country where the games will be held.
It is usually transported by airplane. The flame is then carried around the country where the games
are to be held, using a series of torches carried by people running, walking, riding horses and camels, scuba diving, and using other means of transportation. The last runner has the honor of using a torch to light the large Olympic torch which burns throughout the games. The flame is extinguished during the closing ceremonies. A new Olympics torch is designed for each of the games.
History of the Torch The tradition of the Olympic flame began during the ancient Olympic Games, over 2700 years ago in Greece. A flame was lit for each Olympics, every four years, and burned throughout the games. The flame symbolized the death and rebirth of Greek heroes. There was no torch relay in the ancient Olympics. The first torch relay occurred at the 1936 games in Berlin, Germany.
