Teaching procedures:

Step one: Daily greetings.

Step two: Leading-in 

Question: Ask students if they have ever experienced or heard of any natural disasters, and what they are.

(1) To get students to know some information about Tangshan earthquake. 

Movie time: Play a movie about an earthquake, and then ask students to answer the following questions:

What is the movie about? 2.

How do you feel about the earthquake?



Tell students that there were many earthquakes in the past, and the Tangshan earthquake was one of the greatest earthquakes in human beings’ history. Ask them whether they want to know more details about Tangshan earthquake, and lead them into the text passage.

Step three: Reading 

Fast Reading (skimming) Ask students to read the passage as quickly as they can, discuss in groups and then answer the following questions:

What happened in the passage?

◆ How many parts can you divide the passage into, and what's the main idea

of each part?

Check the answers.



◆ Part One: Signs (Para. 1) Show a picture to the students (some signs about earthquake), and say people often say that “It is always calm before a storm.” Do you agree with this opinion? After students answering, ask them to read the paragraph one carefully and find something strange happened before the earthquake.

◆Part Two: Damage

(Para.2-3)

Ask students to read the paragraph 2 and 3, and then show some pictures about the damage, ask several students to say what the damages are. According to the details, Fill the blanks with the specific data of the Tangshan earthquake.

Correct the answers. ◆Part Three: Rescue

(Para.4)

Get students to read the last paragraph and according to the pictures that are showed on the screen, find out what things were done after the earthquake. Finally let students do the Exercise 1 on page 27.

Make some students present their answers and check them.



Discussion: What shall we do if an earthquake happens? (Group work)

Get some students to present their answers and collect them. Teach students how to protect themselves in the earthquakes.
