一、教学目标：

①

知识目标：了解人类早期航海技术和基本的航海仪器，开拓学生视野；掌握说明文语言特点，尝试实践应用。 ②

能力目标：培养学生通过标题获取中心信息的能力；通过读写结合的教学，增大学生语言输入，增强其语言输出能力，培养学生尝试用说明文的语言进行微写作（概要写作）的能力。 ③

情感目标：开拓学生视野，激发探险兴趣，进而培养学生敢于探险、敢于创新的精神。

二、教学重难点：

通过任务型阅读提高学生获取信息的能力；提高说明文的概要写作能力。

教学步骤：

Step 1 warming up Look at the three pictures on the screen, then try to answer: 1.

Who are they? 2.

What do you know about them?

3.Are they navigators or explorers?

Step 2 pre-reading 1.

Show a map of the ancient times, and ask students: As 70% of the earth are covered by oceans, how did people explore the ocean in the past?

Step 3 reading Task 1 Read the first para.

Try to find out:

What is the question the author wants to answer in the passage.

Key: How did they navigate so well?

Summarize: Reading skill 1--The first paragraph will introduce the main idea.

Task 2 Read the passage, and make the mind map of the passage according to the subheadings.

TASK 3: Check your preview .

Read information on “page 1”, and find the functions of the helpers.(Pay more attention to the verbs.)

TASK 4: Group work：

How many methods are mentioned in “finding longitude”?

Work in groups of 4 or 6，then: 1. Find the working principles. 2. Find the adjectives.

Key: The working principles:

A seaman would measure the sun’s shadow and compare the height of the sun now

with the position of the 'sun at midday

the Astrolabe:

It would tell the position of the ship in relation to the sun and various stars. This gave the seamen the local time and allowed them to find their latitude.
