Step3:让学生通过阅读练习总结发现解题策略,老师进行必要的点拨:

【策略探究】Exploring Reading Strategies

Passage1 I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is

never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.

I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to-3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.

I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.

The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.

Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.

A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all —

LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so. (NMET 2017 1B)

Example 1.

What made the chick calm down? (1B 26.)

A. A new nest.

B. Some food. C. A recording.

Passage2 According to the scientists, rich people often think money can get them out of trouble. This makes them less afraid to take risks. It also means they care less about other people’s feelings.

3 / 7

Finally, it simply makes them greedier. “Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more, and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your self-interest,” said Paul Piff, leading scientist of the study.

Piff pointed out that the findings don’t mean that all rich people are untrustworthy or that all poor people are honest. He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts and values in different ways.

Example 3.

Why did the scientists do the experiments? A.To show how social status affects people's ethics.

B.To show people’s instincts and values in different ways.

C.To test whether the saying “money is the root of all evil” is true.

D.To show the difference between higher-class people and lower-class people.

【应用巩固1·堂上练习】Practice makes perfect. Part 1 In-class Tasks: Task1: One example of a dangerous selfie(自拍) in the study involved bicycle races. People sometimes get on the track to take a picture of themselves with the racing bicycles behind them. Crashes and injuries have resulted. Another example described people standing on train tracks trying to get a selfie as a train moves toward them from behind. The most common cause of selfie death was falling from high places. It caused 32 of the 172 deaths during the last two and one-half years. Drowning was another common cause of death. And it might be more dangerous to be a man with a smartphone. Although women take more selfies, males were far more likely to die during selfies. 75.5% of the reported deaths were of men. About one-third of the 172 reported selfie deaths had a single death while 24 incidents involved the deaths of groups. Two of the incidents killed seven people each. (2017 惠州三调) 31. From the passage, we can learn that________.

A. selfie deaths are always single deaths B. women are more likely to die during selfies C. it is dangerous to participate in bicycle races

D. selfie deaths happened in various ways 

in Providence, Rhode Island, and was meant to fly to Washington then back to London. But when I arrived at the check-in desk at Providence, the lady on the desk said: “Well,

I’m really sorry, I’ve got some bad news for you ---- there are no flights from Washington.” So I took my box and put it on the desk and I said: “In this box are some stem cells that are urgently needed for a patient ---- please, please, you’ve got to get

me back to the United Kingdom.” She just dropped everything. She arranged for a flight on a small plane to be held for me, re-routed (改道) me through Newark and got me back to the UK even earlier than originally scheduled. (2016 1C, Para.2)

31. Which flight did the woman put Peter on first?

A. To London.

B. To Newark.

C. To Providence.

Step5:老师对“解题策略”的补充说明:

Learning Tips+ You don’t have to read for strategies.

You don’t have to read every text in the same way. The way you read a text depends on your reasons for reading it. If you want to be an efficient reader, you should always think about WHY you are reading and then choose the best reading method to achieve your purpose.

Part2 After-class assignments Music has a great effect on everyone. But does music affect plans too? People have been experimenting with music and plans for almost three decades. From school-level projects to high-level scientific experiments, the effect of music on plans has been a confusing and debatable topic. We know music is sound, and sound is nothing more than a wave. Plant growth is a result of the cell division that takes place within the cells. But why is music associated with plant growth? In humans, music has a strong effect on our health and mood, and over the years people have claimed that the same effect of music has been observed on plans, too. Plants are sensitive by nature, and many people claim that they have feelings just as humans do. There are stories about plants shedding tears. Although scientists do not support these as facts, these myths have led them to take up various experiments on plants. Various studies have proved that plants respond to acoustic(声音的) energy. It

increases their rate of growth and their size and inferences their overall health. Dan Carlson, after a thorough study over a span of many years, has reached a conclusion that music helps plants absorb nutrients more efficiently. It took Dan about fifteen years to develop a foliage spray(叶面喷剂) that could be used beneficially with the sound frequencies. Dan calls this spray “Sonic Bloom”. His findings have proved to be beneficial for counselors farmers and have resulted in ---- according to Guinness book of World Records ---- the largest indoor plants on record. The Purple Passion was treated with the Sonic Bloom process. It grew to be 1,300 feet tall and was alive even after 25 years. Its normal lifespan, however, is 18 months and it grows not more than 18 feet tall. The book, Secrets of the Soil, writes about Sonic Bloom and its results. Sonic Bloom is also sold in the market. 1. What inspired scientists to experiment with plants? A. The effect of music all human beings. B. People’s unscientific descriptions of plants. C. The fact that plants grew better with. D. The cell division taking place within the cells.

2. What did Dan Carlson develop? A. A spray called “Sonic Bloom”. B. A method to grow larger plants. C. The largest indoor plants on record. D. Acoustic energy produced from plants. 3. Why was the Purple Passion included in Guinness book of World Records? A. It was the fastest growing plant. B. It was the most sensitive plant.

C. It was the oldest indoor plant. D. It was the largest indoor plant.
