Procedures and time allotment

Stage 1 Getting ready for learning

Step 1 Greeting ( 5 min) (Purpose: to attract students’ attention.)

Say “Good afternoon” to students.

Step 2 Leading in (Purpose: to show the differences between Chinese and English and arouse students’ interests.) Task:

Write down the sentence “世界各地都在举行着庆典” on the whiteboard and invite students to translate it into English. Tell them that it’s better to translate it into the passive voice because that there is a difference between Chinese and English culture. Chinese prefer active voice while English prefer passive voice.

Stage 2 Brainstorming ( 15 mins)

Step 1 Basic rules (Purpose: to review the basic structure of the passive voice.)

Task: Students should fill in blanks about the passive voice.

Step 2 Special rules (Purpose: to review some special words and phrases of the passive voice.) Task: Fill in the blanks with correct verbs. Underline the subject of each sentence. By dividing special words and phrases into different groups, students can remember them better and use them correctly. After finishing each group, students should find out a rule.

Step 3 Conclusion (Purpose: to summarize the tips of the passive voice.) Task: Students should fill in the table and blanks to find out the steps of dealing with the passive voice.

Stage 3 Exercises ( 15 mins)

(Purpose: to review the rules above)

Task: Give four types of tasks: changing, blank-filling and multiple choices to check the knowledge reviewed today.
