学情分析：

练习1和2的目的是训练学生用英语释义的能力。学生在日常学习中非常依赖英汉对译的工具，很容易养成逐字逐句翻译的不良习惯，实际上是不利于英语学习的。在教学中注意引导学生更多地用英语解释英语，提高学生的语言感悟力。练习3创设了更多使用本课词汇的语境，学生做此练习时，首先要熟悉一下所提供的词语，然后快速诵读全文，了解故事内容以后再逐句考虑选词。

教学过程：

Helena was a great athlete in the 5000-metre running race. She had won many prizes and wanted to compete in the Olympic Games. So she practised hard every day in order to be admitted as a competitor. It didn’t take her long to reach the

standard for entering the Olympic Games. This made Helena eager to win a gold medal for herself and her homeland. Unfortunately during the final , she was in front in her race when another competitor pushed her on purpose so that she fell down. Poor Helena lost her chance of a medal but the other woman had to take responsibility for breaking the rules. The judges felt sorry for Helena and gave her a special prize of an olive wreath instead.
