Module3 Unit1 Festivals Around the World Reviewing and Applying 单元课题:Module 3 Unit 1 Festivals Around the World 本节课题:Reviewing and Applying

Background information School: Laifeng Number 1 Middle School

Student: Class 2,Grade 1 Size: over 40 Time & date: 8:00-8:40 am, Friday, 10th April, 2019 Type of lesson: Reviewing and Applying Teaching method: Task based teaching and learning Teaching tools: multimedia, PPT, blackboard, textbook, blackboard, chalk Material: Module 3 UNIT 1 Learning about language

Teacher: Duan Qing Analysis of the Teaching Material The teaching material is from Module 3 Unit 1 of the PEP edition. The topic of this unit is Festivals Around the World. This class mainly teach students to introduce a Chinese traditional festival. This unit talks about festivals of many kinds in different parts of the world. An important element in the unit is the opportunity to compare and contrast cultural practices in China and societies. Most cultures have celebrations that include food, music, dress, dance and opportunities to get together in a relaxing environment. The teacher will introduce some festivals that are celebrated in China and information about how to celebrate them. In this part, we will do a little quiz about festivals and celebrations, also we’ll review some key words and phrases to try to introduce a festival. Two of the most helpful tools in learning English language are prefixes and suffixes. The ability to recognize suffix endings on words can help students accurately guess a word’s part of speech and its function in a sentence. So the students will do a task which introduces students three of the most common suffix endings: -(a)tion, -ous and -al. There are many activities in this class which will help students practise describing Chinese customs. These activities are designed to assist students in developing higher-order thinking skills and to become more flexible in their usage of English. It is important to encourage them to adapt their present

knowledge and skill to a variety of situations wherever they can. The purpose of this class is to encourage the students to speak, read and write about festivals.

Analysis of the students

Since they have learned the reading passage of this unit, they are familiar with the topic of festivals around the world and know some celebrations about some festivals. But they may not know how to make a poster to introduce a festival. Moreover, their vocabulary is limited so they may have difficulties in using sentences to introduce a festival including its celebrations.

On that day western people will dress their houses up with Christmas trees and they will exchange gifts with each other. Friends will send gifts to others to express wishes and loves. Also people believe that Santa Claus will drive the reindeer to send presents to children. That’s all. Thank you for listening. So when you try to introduce a festival, you can do it by asking yourself four questions which are: 1. When is it celebrated? 2.What is the festival about? 3. Why will we celebrate the festival? 4. How will we celebrate it? Am I clear?

Reflection

This lesson is from Module 3 Unit 1 Festivals Around the world. This is a learning about language lesson. The main content of this lesson is to introduce some festivals in China. So the key and difficult point of this lesson is to let students know more about some typical festivals in China, as well as the significance of these festivals and the celebrations held in these festivals. Since the students have just learned the reading passage -- Festivals and Celebrations, they are still very impressed with the festival activities, so when I design this lesson, I pay attention to make students enjoy the class and arouse students' interest. First of all, in the lead-in part we’ll do a quiz about Chinese traditional festivals and celebrations through 5 tasks with a series of coherent questions. By these tasks we can arouse students' interests in festivals, induce students' thinking, stimulate students' subjective initiative in learning, so as to guide students to actively be involved in class. When it comes to the design of questions, I decide to set them from the shallow to the deep and from the surface to the inside. I’ll try to simplify the form of the question to stimulate students' interest. At the same time, when students can't answer some questions, I will promptly enlighten them by asking questions.

Secondly, in the process of classroom instruction, I’ll try to focus on the following points:

1.

To arouse students' interest in learning, classroom questioning needs to be from shallow to deep, from easy to difficult, so that we can pay attention to students at all levels and students can actively participate in teaching activities. At the same time, it constantly attracts students' attention and activates their thoughts by all the tasks and activities. 2.

Questions should be designed with certain enlightenment so they can expand the breadth of thinking, enhance students' self-confidence and benefit their intellectual development.

3.

The means and techniques of detection are very important. When we test students, continuous and reasonable questions can well attract students' attention, so as to improves the effectiveness of classroom teaching.

Thirdly, after the end of the class, I summarized some of my own problems in the classroom:

1.

There are some of words which I pronounced incorrectly. So I need to practise pronunciation and practise my English more. 2.

The form of questions that I asked in the class is too simple. When I asked questions about festivals in the classroom, most students are active. But those questions cannot stimulate students’ thoughts.

3.

I should use more encouraging words in the class to enhance students’ self-confidence, so that they can be more confident to communicate in English.

4.

At evaluating part, the time was a little rushed. I should give students more time to do mutual evaluation and self-evaluation.

Through the reflection of this lesson, I will pay more attention to these shortcomings in the future teaching design and classroom teaching. So that I will constantly improve my teaching ability and improve the effectiveness of my classroom teaching.

Self-evaluation This part aims at encouraging students to make a self-assessment after they finish the poster

and introduce a festival. They should check to see what experience, skill and knowledge they have obtained, if their interest has increased or decreased, if they are using effective ways of learning, what problems they have and what solutions they have found, etc.

Teacher’ Self-evaluation: 1.

Guide students to master and apply the new words, phrases and sentence structures by repeated practice. 2.

Develop students’ language and writing ability according to all the tasks.

3.

Develop students’ communicative ability by making a poster to introduce a festival. 4.

Develop students’ the ability of public performance and cooperative awareness. 5.

Let students write down words and phrases on the blackboard, which not only can test whether they have a command of knowledge or not but also can improve students’ oral English.

6.

Make the class more interesting and vivid by using intuitional teaching aid. Students’ Self-evaluation: 1.

Have you mastered the usage of all those words that we have reviewed in this class? 2.

Do you know the celebrations of the three Chinese traditional festivals? 3.

What new language about festivals have you mastered from this class? 4.

Can you make a poster to introduce a festival? 5.

How well have you done in all the activities? 6.

What problems did you have while having this class?
