I.

Theoretical basis. According to the New Curriculum Standards 2017 edition, English language teaching is to help develop the students’

key competences. What the teachers should keep in mind is the view of English learning activities, so the teachers should try to create various activities of different levels.

II. Analysis of the students The Chinese students are every day drowned in Chinese context. Seldom do they have a chance to use English. Moreover, some of them do not have regular basic knowledge. Most of them are passive learners and have no favorable habits. However, they are young, creative and well plastic. They are in high spirits and eager to explore the unknown world. III. Analysis of the teaching material This lesson is the reading part which plays an important role in the English language learning of this unit. It is an authentic biography that focuses on humorous master Charlie Chaplin, which is an interesting topic to the students. After learning it, the students can not only gain some language skills, but also can raise their optimistic attitude towards life and work.

IV. Teaching objectives and difficult points and key points According to the above analysis, teaching objectives should be as follows:

1. Learn and understand the things about Charlie Chaplin by reading.

2. Find out the elements included in a biography by mindmapping.

3.

Recognize and taste the English humor by acting. Key point: learn and understand the life of Charlie Chaplin by drawing a mind map . Difficult point: recognize and taste the English humor by acting

V. Teaching method and learning method

In order to achieve the teaching objectives and fulfill the key points and difficult points: The teaching methods: Task-based language teaching, mindmapping and discussing.

The learning method: Cooperative & Exploratory learning method by reading, mindmapping and discussing. The teaching aid is multimedia.

VI. Teaching procedures Step 1 Warming up and lead-in Greet the students and then ask them: Do you know what a punchline is?

Scene 1:

two students talk about a humorous topic: chicken.

Scene2:

two students talk about the pun: ring.

Scene 3:

a student gives a riddle and asks others to guess

After seeing the video, I will use the following questions to lead to the topic. a.

What does “chicken” mean?

What’s the meaning of “ring”?

Can you guess the riddle? Purpose: encourage students to talk about the humor and stimulate the students' interest in the

class. Step 2 Reading The students read the text and finish some activities. Activity1: Read the text and answer the following questions:

1. who is the master?

2. What is the type of writing? (Single choice)

3. What are mentioned in the text about him? (Multiple choice) Purpose: to get a general idea of the text and have a better understanding of the type, which can lay a foundation of the next activity.

Activity2: Read again, and draw a mind map of the text.

Why is laughter so important?

Students answer the first question after reading the para.1 and draw the mind map.

Then students are divided into 4 groups, each group reads a paragraph and finish the mind map by answering questions. G1: Can you find some words to describe his childhood?

G2: What are mentioned about his character ? G3: How about his acting? G4: Why is he loved and remembered? Purpose:

to cultivate the students to abstract and summarize the information from the text, improving their cooperative learning abilities.

Activity 3: Talk about Charlie Chaplin according to the mind map. Charlie Chaplin made great contribution to the lives of people__________________________. His life was not easy. He was born in

_________________but he is _________. He grew popular because of his charming character. This character was a _____________________________

but was_____________________________________to overcome all difficulties. His acting was so__________________________ that ________________________________________________. He is loved and remembered____________________________________________________.

Purpose:encourage students to talk about Charlie Chaplin, which can improve their language skills.

Step 3 Using language (speaking) Activity4:

1.What is his attitude towards life and work?

2. Which kind of spirit can we learn from him? Students talk about the two questions and share their ideas. Purpose: lead the students to find the spirit of Chaplin from his attitude towards life and job

and encourage them to practice and use English to evaluate a person. Step 4 Discussion

Activity5: Do and Guess Write down at least 5sentences to describe a student you admire in our class in group of four. One of the group members reads the sentences and the other does the typical actions and facial

expressions of the student. The rest of the students guess who is described.

Purpose: help students find out the elements included in a biography and taste the humor in our life

Step 5 Summary and Homework

Ask some students to

summarize the text according to the mind map. And lead the students to learn Chaplin’s attitude towards life and work and the spirit of him.

Homework: Write a biography about a person you admire in your life.
