The First Period
Teaching Aims:
a. A Hard Expedition
Teaching Methods:
Teaching Aids: The multimedia; a tape recorder; the blackboard Teaching Procedures: Step1 Greetings Greet the whole class as usual.
Step2
Revision
Check the homework exercises. Step 3 Presentation Present the students some pictures of the early sailors and explorers, as well as the pictures of navigating tools, including maps, compass, etc. Step 4 Pre-reading Ask the students to read the 3 questions of the passage A Hard Expedition: 1.
Why did the crew get lost on the sea? A. Because the wind was roaring. B. Because they were at the mercy of the sea. C. Because they couldn’t reckon the precise latitude and their magnetic compass was awkward and not reliable. 2.
Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. The horizon, celestial objects overhead, seaweed, tide and logs with a knotted rope helped the crew make sure of the sailing course precisely. B. Sailing alongside cliffs was a good way to avoid being on a random course heading nowhere. C. The crew suffered from not only starvation and thirst but also psychological problems. 3.
What result did this incident lead to? A. This incident led to that all the crew lost heart. B. This incident led to a miracle. C. This incident led to that portable equipment for secure voyage was simplified and updated. Step 5 Reading 1. Ask the students to read the passage A Hard Expedition: In 1662, an expedition to the North Pole
set loose
from the equator.
The
Encyclopedia
records the background of this exploration.
After outward departure at dusk, the crew
deposited their parcels and did their routine. But they couldn’t reckon
the precise
latitude. And the
magnetic
compass was awkward
and not reliable. Gradually, the crew, who were at the mercy of the sea
and roaring wind when offshore,
lost their way. They had to use the horizon, celestial objects overhead, seaweed, tide and logs with
a knotted rope as the course reference. To avoid being on a random course heading nowhere, they sometimes even sailed alongside
cliffs,
whose shortcomings were obvious. The dilemma lasted long. Starvation and thirst caused psychological tension. Foreseeing the minimum chance of escaping the jaw of death, the crew lost heart and even allowed the seabirds to swoop to tear
and peck them. With so many hardships and drawbacks, their survival was a miracle.
This incident increased the tendency of a compulsory reform on nautical equipment for secure voyage. Portable equipment
was simplified and updated.
2. Discuss the answers to the 3 questions: C
2. C
3. C
Step 6 Difficult and Useful Sentences Study 1. They had to use the horizon, celestial objects overhead, seaweed, tide and logs with a knotted
rope as the course reference.

2. To avoid being on a random course heading nowhere, they sometimes even sailed alongside cliffs, whose shortcomings were obvious.

A ray of sunlight fell on the sleeping girl.

Step 7 Listening and Reading Aloud Play the tape and ask the students to listen and repeat the passage.
Step 8 Homework 1. Retell the passage A Hard Expedition. 2. Preview Reading SAILING THE OCEANS on page 12.
