1. Watch a picture (of The Dodo) and describe his appearance.

Designing purpose: This part is to focus the students on how the dodo became extinct . It is an opportunity for developing imaginative ideas. It can enable the students to have a deep understanding of animal extinction.

Step 2. Pre—listening Before listening to the dodo’s story, try to predict in pairs how it might have become extinct. Do you want to know possible reasons of dodos’ extinction? ▲

Designing purpose: The students’

interest of knowing more about the dodo’s story has been aroused bypredicting these questions. And this prepare the students well for the listening.

Step 3. Listening 1. Ss look through the questions on page 30, and then listen to the tape. 2. First listening: Ss listen and grasp the key words and get the main idea (Exercise 3). 3. Second listening: Ss listen and choose the correct answers (Exercise 4). 4. Third listening: Ss listen and check the answers (looking at listening materials).

Designing purpose: Make the students know about the dodo and factor of their endangering. Let them know importance and necessity of protecting wild animals. Establish the consciousness of environmental protection. Meanwhile, one of the students’

listening skills---getting the main idea of a paragraph and summarizing a passage can be well developed. At the same time, they can also practise their listening English. Step 4. Speaking 1. Discuss in groups: Why is the panda endangered and how to protect it? 2. Show time: （Report their ideas to the whole class.）

3. Discuss: Choose another endangered animal which you know about, analyse why this animal is endangered and discuss what you might do to save it.

Designing purpose:

This is an opportunity for developing practical suggestions or imaginative ideas and learning to cooperate. The students will

talk about the panda and the reasons of endangering using the useful expressions, and talk about the suggestions of protecting animal further so that their moral ability will be improved.

Step 5. Summary and homework

We’ve learnt the story of the dodo.

What can you learn from it? Try to write a passage about ways to protect the panda.

have learnt about animal extinction in class has well prepare them for this writing exercise. And this can encourage the students to focus on their roles in the world and think more of their future.
