Activity 1 Leading in
Show a movie clip of Modern Times, review what they have learned last unit, and lead the topic to body language.
T: how do you feel about this movie? Ss: Funny, humorous…
T: why do you think so? Did he say something funny?
Ss: Behavior/ action... T: Great, it is a kind of nonverbal humour. And we can call these behaviors or actions body languages.
Activity 2 Introducing
Ss are supposed to learn the definition, function, classification and the importance of body language. Some examples are also presented.
T: what is body language? Please try to fill in the blanks.
T: actually, body language is not only used in mimes to make people laugh, but also plays an important role in our daily communication.
T: so if someone uses body language to communicate with you, can you understand him or her? Let’s have a try.
First, prepare a piece of paper. Second, watch this video carefully. While watching, we are supposed to write down the words that body language means. For example, if we see this one, we should write down “surprised”
(教师播放无声无字幕视频)
T: XXX, please tell us the words you have written down?
S responses. T: Now, let’s watch it again, and have a check. (教师播放有声有字幕视频)
T: so you, sometimes, we do not need to say, but understand each other through our body languages. That is, we say, better communication.
T: in this video, the man uses his arms, his face, his whole body to express himself. We call
this kind of body language “posture”
T: but we do not need to use our hour body all the time. For example, which part does she use to express her feeling?
Ss: facial expression. T: she uses her face to express her feelings. And we call this kind of body language “facial expression”
T: seeing your wonderful performance, a man from south Korea wants to say something to you. Here he is. He is likely to say?
T: he uses the actions of his hand to express himself. We call this kind of body language “gesture”
T: ok, now, we have mentioned three types of body language. They are? Posture is about the action of? Facial expression is about the action of? Gesture is about the action of? And all these three are called body language T: congratulations! Now you are masters of body language! Masters, are you ready for my challenge?
Activity 3 Acting
(10mins) Ss play a game. T: look, this is our stage. I’ll invent one student to come here to act by using body language, and the rest of you guess what he or she wants to say.
Ss: Yes
T: who want to be the first challenger? no one? Don’t be so shy. Ok, I will be the first. I pick out a piece of paper, and …. Now, please look at me carefully. (教师做手势)What does it mean? Ss response. T: Now, who want to be the next one? Who wants to have a try? To show yourself. Who is the best actor or actress in our class?
T: What does he want to tell us? Ss response T: Great, I’m strong. Thank you. You are really a great actor. Anyone else? Who want to have a try?, come here, please. Ss response
T: And…?
Ss response.
T: great. One more student? Who will catch this chance? Whose performance do you want to see most? Could you? T: Are they right? What are you going to tell us?
Ss: I am thinking. T: yes, great. Here comes the last one. What does this body language mean? Ss: OK. T: Or we say, it means yes, or it doesn’t matter, in our country, right?
T: However, does it have the same meaning in other countries, for example, Japan?
Ss: Money. T: Great, money. And…what about France? What does it mean in France?
Ss response T: But in Brazil and Germany, this gesture is very rude, just like this one in our country. Do not use it in these two countries. So what can we learn from this gesture? You see, these are different countries. And here are different meanings. So what can learn from this gesture?
S responses T: great, body language has different meanings in different countries. Or we say, cultures, 文化。So we must use the ok gesture carefully. Otherwise, it will cause…misunderstanding. 误解.
Activity 4 Greeting
Different ways of greeting are presented.
T: recently, Bill Gates has come across such kind of misunderstanding. Please fill in the blanks and let’s see what happened.
T: what’s the problem? What caused this misunderstanding?
Ss response. T: in American culture, one-hand shake is ok; while in Korean culture, it is rude and not respectful. That is to say, these two cultures have different ways of greeting. How do you usually greet each other?
T: If you travel to India, will you shake hands with people, or greet them with two palms together?
