Analysis of the Teaching Material

The topic of this reading material is about robot which is closely related to the students’

life and interests. This passage mainly talks about the Android named Andy and shows us it can play football just like human beings. The whole passage has a relatively clear structure. It hopes that after the learning of this passage, students will get some detailed information about Andy as well as using their own words to describe the Android by themselves correctly.

Analysis of the Students

The students are at Grade one of high school. This is the second period of the unit, so before the learning of this passage, they have already learned some related words and phrases about human intelligence. Meanwhile, for the reading strategies, students have already known some of them like skimming or scanning but may still have difficult to apply them. What’s more, the topic robot-Andy the android is close to their daily life and they will be very interested in this topic and willing to get some information about it in this reading material. So it may not be so difficult for them to understand the content of this passage and express their own opinion in this lesson.

Teaching Objectives

By the end of this period, the students are expected:



From the aspect of knowledge:

(1) to recognize some new words and phrases:as big as;look like,striker;signal;personally;encourage sb to do sth ; in a way ; coach ; arises; artificial intelligence ,with the help of ;electronic brain.

(2) to get some information about the human intelligence, like the function of the robot; 

From the aspect of ability:

(3) to develop their reading strategies of skimming to find out the main idea of passage;

(4) to develop their reading strategies of scanning to locate specific information such as when ,how ,who ,where of this passage about Andy; (5) to express their own opinions about human intelligence and try to design as well describe their own robot with their own words (6) to master the skills of how to write a composition about android 

From the aspect of emotional:

Important points (1) to learn the target language and understand the content of the passage; (2) to let students talk about robots freely and master the skill of how to write the composition about their designed robot . 

Difficult points (1) to develop their reading strategies, such as predicting the content of the text, skimming the text for the gist, scanning the text for the specific information; (2)to encourage them to be more confident to express their own opinion as well as write a

composition about android without difficulty;
