About the students Students are Grade 2, and they have finished the 6 books of compulsory course, which means that they are equipped with adequate language storage for reading book9.

Teaching Procedures: Step1: Lead-in (prediction) T: Do you like reading stories?

Ss: Yes. T: Every time we read a story, we usually start from the…

Ss: the title. T: Absolutely. Then let’s first read the title: The Greatest Navigational Journey: A Lesson In Survival. This is a relatively long title, and would you please make some predictions? According to the title, what do you think may have happened in the journey? Ss:…

T: Let’s go through the passage quickly to check whether your prediction is right.

Step2: Reading TASK1

Read to get a general idea of the story and answer/finish: 1. Who took the journey? 2. Who did "we" refer to?

3. How long did the journey take? 4. How did they take the journey? 5. Summarize the main idea of the story. T: Time to share your answers. Who took the journey?

Ss: Captain Bligh and “we”. T: Who do “we” refer to? Ss: “we” refer to the sailors. T: How long did the journey take? Ss:…

T: How did they take the journey? Ss: They took the journey on an open boat. T: You know what is an open boat like? (Takes out the book and point to the attached picture), see, this is an open boat. And why did they have to take their journey in such a simple boat? Ss: Because some sailors took over the ship and they deposited the captain and other sailors into a small boat.

T: Up to now, we have collected the information of “who, when, where, how,” of the story, let’s

try to summarize the main idea. S1: Captain Bligh and his sailors took a journey of over 40 days across the Pacific Ocean in 1789. T: (to other students) Do you agree? Actually in this passage, there is one sentence giving the main idea of the story. Have you noticed? Which sentence is it? Ss: Yes, it is the first sentence of the passage. T: Let’s read the first sentence aloud together. (The first sentence: I am proud to have sailed with Captain Bligh on his journey of over 40 days through about 4,000 miles in an open boat across the Pacific Ocean in 1789.) T: The author said “I am proud to have sailed…” does that mean he had another choice? What were the choices?

S1: One choice is to risk certain death by sitting close together on a small, crowded open boat with very little food and water. And the other one is to stay on the “Bounty” with the crew and face certain death from the British Navy if caught. T: Nice. And the author said “those

of us on board the “Bounty” were caught in a dilemma”, means that they were in a dilemma which to choose. By the way, what is “Bounty’?

Ss: It is the name of the ship. T: So according to the context, can you figure out what “dilemma” means? (Those of us on board the “Bounty” were caught in a dilemma Was it better to risk certain death by sitting close together on a small, crowded open boat with very little food and water? Or should one stay on the “Bounty” with the crew and face certain death from the British Navy if caught?) Ss:…

T: We know a certain choice will lead to a certain result. So next, let’s continue reading to see what was their result? Read paragraph 5 and answer:

TASK2: para5

CHOICERESULT

1. Did they survive? 2. What did they look like when arriving in Timor?

3. How did they feel? 4. What did they think of their journey? T: Actually, from the title, we know they survived. What did they look like when arriving in Timor?

Ss: They were exhausted.

T: Find an expression in paragraph5 to describe their appearance that time. Ss: : a disturbing sight”

T: Well done! And how did they feel? Find sentences to support your idea. S1: The sentence “we couldn’t stop talking about our voyage“

tells us that they were very excited. T: Smart answer. Was there any other feelings? S2: The sentence “we were the heroes who had escaped the jaws of death“ shows that they were very proud of themselves. T: Great. They were excited. They were proud of themselves. And what did they think of their journey?

S3: From the last sentence, I think they considered this journey the greatest navigational journey. T: Thank you all for your brilliant answers. Are you curious about what made their journey so great? Let’s go on reading.

Task3

read para2-4 and finish the tasks below.

1. During the journey: Difficulties and Challenges How did Captain Bligh face it/them? no charts, only compass and a quadrant measured…, set…

shared equally

little food and lack of fresh water their state of mind

Kept the sailors all busy reading…;

Try to preserve … by telling stories and talking hopefully; was determined not to give up; continued his navigational measurements every day; kept them busy and tried to take their minds off…

Hard to cope; drive you mad; half believed; foresee…would die; sleepy, half-alive state;

How did “we”

face it/them? read the tables to work out

2. What does the writer think of Captain Bligh? Tick the labels and find the supporting details.

with great navigational skills

a great leader

With great navigational skills:

1) It was extremely difficult for us to get a correct reading from the quadrant as the boat moved constantly. The captain used a system called “dead reckoning”. He knew there was a land directly

northwest of our original position.

2) As you can see from the map we kept to a straight course pretty well.

A great leader:

1) kept us all busy reading…(T: Why was Captain Bligh doing this? Ss: In order to take their minds off their extreme condition. )

2) shared the daily food among them all.

3) was determined not to give up; continued his navigational measurements every day;

4)tried to preserve their good spirits by telling stories and talking hopefully…

3. Discussion: What lesson did “I” learn?

Possible answer:

Without Captain Bligh, without Captain Bligh’s determination,

without Captain Bligh’s navigational skills, without Captain Bligh’s leadership, we would not have survived.

Step3: Post-reading Q: In your opinion, should Captain Bligh receive a special medal for the journey? Why?

(*You may organize your speech in the following way:

Personally, Captain Bligh should receive a special medal. My reason are as follows: firstly,… in addition,…, to sum up/in a word…)

Ask one or two students to present their speech.

Step4: Homework

1. Polish your speech.

2. Surf the Internet to get to know more about Captain Bligh.
