Teaching Plan of The Band That Wasn’t Period 2 Reading for Writing

Teaching aims: 1. Ss will be able to make reasonable guessing and write a short passage (60–80 words ) to complete the story, according to the detailed information that they’ve read in the former part of the story. 2. Ss will be familiar with this band--- the Monkees. Important & Difficult points: Important point: it will be important for Ss to find out the information about how the Monkees started and developed, and try to describe what kind of band the Monkees is. Difficult point:

Ss may find it difficult to describe the Monkees, so they can discuss with their partners to make it easier and Ss may have much deeper understanding through the discussion.

2.

Ss may also find it difficult to complete the story. So they’d better understand how the Monkees was like in the past, and get the meaning of the title: the Monkees wasn’t a real band.

Then according to the linking word “however” which means sth changed, Ss will be able to make a guessing that the Monkees will be different from the past, so they will become a real band in the end.

Teaching procedure Step1 Reading ①Have you ever wanted to be part of a band as a famous singer or musician? Have you ever dreamed of playing in front of thousands of people at a concert, at which everyone is clapping and appreciating your music? Do you sing karaoke and pretend you are a famous singer like Song Zuying or Liu Huan? To be honest, a lot of people

attach great importance to becoming rich and famous. But just how do people form a band? ②Many musicians meet and form a band because they like to write and play their own music. They may start as a group of high-school students, for whom practising their music in someone's house is the first step to fame. Sometimes they may play to passers-by in the street or subway so that they can earn some extra money for themselves or to pay for their instruments. Later they may give performances in pubs or clubs,

for which

they are paid in cash. Of course they hope to make records in a studio and sell millions of copies to become millionaires!

③However, there was one band that started in a different way. It was called the Monkees and began as a TV show. The musicians were to play jokes on each other as well as play music,

most of which was based loosely on the Beatles. The TV organizers had planned to find four musicians who could act as well as sing. They put an advertisement in a newspaper looking for rock musicians, but they could only find one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three members of the band.

④As some of these actors could not sing well enough, they had to rely on other musicians to help them. So during the broadcasts they just pretended to sing. Anyhow their performances were humorous enough to be copied by other groups. They were so popular that their fans formed clubs in order to get more familiar with

them. Each week on TV, the Monkees would play and sing songs written by other musicians. However,

after a year or so, ……

Q1: How are most bands formed? (Para2) Read para2, and try to answer the question. 

As most students like listening to music, so they must know some famous bands. And then Ss will be interested in finding out how these bands are formed.

Q2: How did the Monkees start and develop? (Para3-4) Focus on para 3-4,and try to find out how the Monkees started and developed.



After reading, Ss will be able to find the detailed information to answer the question, which will make them prepared for the next question.

Ask Ss to discuss in a group about what kind of band the Monkees was by using these adj., and give the reason. (write down these adj. that Ss use in the discussion) 

As Ss have got some facts about how the Monkees started and developed, it will be not so difficult for them to describe the Monkees. And after the discussion, Ss will find the Monkees was formed in a different way from other bands. So we can refer to the meaning of the title: the band that wasn’t a real band. (write down the meaning of the title) Step2 Writing 1.

Guessing & Writing

However, after a year or so,

Ss are asked to write a short passage to complete the story of the Monkees depending on their own guessing. 

As Ss have known that the Monkees wasn’t a real band in the past, and here is a word “however” which means sth has changed, they will be able to guess that the Monkees will be different from their past. So the band will become a real band in the end.

Sharing & Assessing Ask Ss to share the writing with the class. And also give the reason why they think so. And it will be better if other Ss will be able to assess whether the writing is reasonable or not. 

It should be made sure that the Monkees will become a real band in the end according to what we’ve read from para3-4 and the meaning of title as well as the linking word “however”. Besides that, Ss can also add some varied ideas, such as the Monkees may break up, because their fans become tired of them. And later they think about their problem, and decide to become a real band. Step3 Homework Make assessment to your own writing if it is reasonable. If not ,try to improve it.
