Language is learned to be used in and for communication. So in this period we shall have the students read and speak in English, making use of the focused words, expressions, structures and topic ideas covered in this unit. Warming up by a short video and jokes comes first to be followed by reading , understanding and doing the exercises. Guided speaking will lead to the end of the period: closing down by acting.

Knowledge aims: 1 Make use of the focused words, expressions, structures and topic ideas covered in this unit to express their ideas

2. Enable the students to understand and enjoy reading the paragraph of Jokes about Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Ability aims: 1. Improve students’ reading and speaking ability. 2. Improve students’ reading and speaking ability. 3. Help students improve their cooperation ability. Emotion aims: 1. Raise the students’ interest in having a taste of humor.

2. Enable students know the importance of having a taste of humor in their daily life .

Help the students learn how to understand and enjoy English humors. Help the students to feel confident in learning English.

Step1. Warming up

Warming-up by playing a short video.

Step2. Brain-storming

Ask students to name some types of verbal humors they know. Show pictures about them and then summarize.

Step3. Reading and understanding. Ask the students to read the three jokes and understand them. Match the jokes with the explanation. Step4. Reading and understanding. Give the students 3 minutes to read the short story then answer the two questions: 1.How did Watson answer Holmes’question? 

--I think of how short life is and how long the universe lasted. 

--I think of how small I am and how vast the sky is. 

--I think of how cold the universe is and how warm people can be in their beds. 2. What happened actually?

Someone has stolen their tent. Step5. Speaking.

Is it a funny story? Discuss with your partner. You may use the following expressions to help you I (don’t) enjoy it very much because---

--- I prefer--- because--- Step6.Group work Change the story into a dialogue. Act it in groups of three-Holmes, Watson and a narrator. Try to bring out the humor. Then act it out.. 1. Divide the students in small groups 2. Give the students about 5 minutes to prepare (offer help if they need) 3. Ask students to show their dialogue. Step7. Summarize Do you remember these expressions if you like or dislike something: I (don’t) enjoy it very much because---
