Learning about Language (The V–ing form as the Subject & Object)

Aims Teach students the –ing form as the Subject & Object through explaining the usage in detail so that students can have a thorough understanding of the V-ing form. Teach students how to use the V–ing form as the Subject&Objiect through doing some exercises so that students can get the hang of it. Procedures I. Warming up Read the passage A Pioneer For All People and discover sentences with V–ing form. Since then, finding ways to grow more rice has been his life goal. He enjoys listening to violin music, playing mah-jong, swimming and reading. Spending money on himself or leading a comfortable life also means very little to him. Just dreaming for things, however, costs noyhinh. II. Analyze those sentences and try to figure out the usage of the V–ing form. 

The V-ing form is used as subject: Using the v-ing form at the beginning of the sentence.

Seeing is believing. After it is not good/ it is no use /etc., we usually use the v-ing form as the real subject of the sentence.

A It(formal subject) is no use/ no good/ fun / a waste of time/ a good pleasure, etc. + doing…

It is no use crying over spilt milk. B It(formal subject) is useless/ nice/ good/ interesting/ worthwhile, etc. + doing…

The museum is worth paying a visit to. 

The v-ing form as Object：

Gerund as direct object: E.g He enjoys listening to violin music, playing mah-jong, swimming and reading. 

verbs or phrases usually followed by the v-ing form as object:

avoid 避免miss 错过（少）postpone 拖延；

suggest 建议finish 完成（多）practise 练习；

enjoy 喜欢imagine 想象can’t help 忍不住; admit承认deny否定（与）envy嫉妒

escape逃避risk冒险（莫）forgive原谅

stand忍受keep保持（不）mind介意

Gerund as object of preposition: E.g Do you feel like taking a walk? III. Consolidating by doing exercises
