B The Scar of Love Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out of the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks and shirt as he went. He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle or the lake, an alligator(短嘴鳄)was getting close. The mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In great fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U—turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched(抓住)his legs. That began an unbelievable tug-of-war(拔河比赛)between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard their screams; rushed from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator. Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived .His legs were extremely scarred by the terrible attack of the animal. And on his

4

arms ,were deep scratches where his mother's fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved. The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy after the trauma(外伤),asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted the pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter," Look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mum wouldn't let go." You and I can identify with(认同)that little boy. We have scars, too. Not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friends, are because we have refused to let go. 24.The underlined part "the two" in the second paragraph refers to_______. A. the son and the alligator

B. the mother and the son C. the driver and the alligator

D. the alligator and the mother 25.From the passage we can infer_______. A. The mother was unwilling to let the alligator go B. The mother was actually stronger than the alligator C. The son was proud of his scars on his arms D. The son was ashamed of his scars on his legs 26.According to the last paragraph, what is the writer's real meaning? A. To forget the past is to betray.

B. We should forget the scars. C. Wounds are different from scars.

D. We should learn to let go sometimes. 27.What type does the author develop the passage? A. Comparison.

B. Narration with comments. C. Classification.

D. Analysis. C A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off---if it is milked from a cow at night.

5

Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food. Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer. While the effect of cow’s milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night. Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax. Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night. 28.According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk _________. A. started sleep more easily

B. were more anxious C. were less active

D. woke up later 29.Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text? A. It’s been tested on mice for ten times. B. It can make people more energetic. C. It exists in milk in great amount. D. It’s used in sleeping drugs. 30.What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Night Milk and Sleep

B. Fat, Sugar and Health C. An Experiment on Mice

D. Milk Drinking and Health 31.How does the author support the theme of the text? A. By giving examples.

B. By stating arguments.

6

C. By explaining statistical data.

D. By providing research results. D My husband hasn’t stopped laughing about a funny thing that happened to me. It’s funny now but it wasn't at the time.

Last Friday, after doing all the family shopping in town, I wanted a rest before catching the train, so I bought a newspaper and some chocolate and went into the station coffee shop - that was a cheap self-service place with long tables to sit at. I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table to keep a place, and went to get a cup of coffee. When I went back with the coffee, there was someone in the next seat. It was one of those wild-looking youngsters, with dark glasses and worn clothes, and hair colored bright red at the front. Not so unusual these days. What did surprise me was that he'd started to eat my chocolate! Naturally, I was annoyed. However, to avoid trouble--and really I was rather uneasy about him--I just looked down at the front page of the newspaper, tasted my coffee and took a bit of chocolate. The boy looked at me closely. Then he took a second piece of my chocolate. I could hardly believe it. Still I didn't dare to start an argument. When he took a third piece, I felt more angry than uneasy. I thought, “Well, I shall

have the last piece.” And I got it.

The boy gave me a strange look, and then stood up. As he left he shouted out. “This woman's crazy!” Everyone stared. That was embarrassing enough, but it was worse when I finished my coffee and got ready to leave. My face went red--as red as his hair--when I realized I'd made a mistake. It wasn’t my chocolate that he’d been taking. There was mine, unopened, just under my newspaper.

32.The woman in the story ________. A. wanted a newspaper and some chocolate to take home to her family B. bought some chocolate so that she could keep a place at the table C. had been very tired and needed some time to recover D. always went shopping with her family on Fridays 33.When the woman saw the boy go on eating the chocolate, she felt ________.

7

A. more and more disappointed at losing the chocolate B. too tired to start an argument C. too shy to look in the boy’s direction

D. more and more angry with the boy 34.The woman’s face turned red ________.

A. because she realized that she had been quite wrong about the boy B. because she realized that the boy was poor and angry C. because she saw everyone staring at her D. because she hated being shouted at 35.From the story we can see the woman ________. A. was careless and selfish

B. was being careless C. often made mistakes

D. was crazy 三、七选五
