Unit 5 Grammar Subjunctive Mood ( 1 ) 铜梁中学: 王一
Teaching objective
1) Students are required to talk about situations that are not true or not likely to become true using if clause. 2) Emotional Theme: There is no subjunctive mood in our life. In this part, a message is delivered to the Ss that we should make good use of what we have now and don’t always daydream. Only in this way can we create a beautiful future. Teaching contents

Step 1: Leading-in Introduce subjunctive mood with self-introduction Step 2: studying and finding the rules 1)
in affirmative sentence: Ss find the rules by reading the poem in their books. If all the seas were one sea,
If all the trees were one tree,
If all the axes were one ax, If all the men were one man,
If the big man took the great ax, and cut down the big tree, and let it drop into the big sea Question: Could all the “if”s become true?

what a big ax that would be! what a big man that would be! what a splash that would be! Question: Could all these become true?
Rules : if clause : were / did
Main clause: would + do/ be If Mom were still with me now, I could live a happier life. If Mom were still alive now, Dad might be more healthy. If Mom saw her grandchildren, she should be very happy. If Mom knew my success, she would feel proud. Rules: if clause : were / did
Main clause: would / could/ might / should + do/ be 2)
In negative sentences: Ss find the rules by reading sentences given on PPT. If I weren’t an English teacher, I wouldn’t stand here now.
If there weren’t many teachers here, I wouldn’t feel so nervous.
If I didn’t feel nervous now, my face wouldn’t turn red.
If my face didn’t turn red, you wouldn’t know I am nervous.
Rules : if clause : weren’t
/ didn’t
Main clause: would / could/ might / should (not) + do/ be 3)
In Yes/No question: Ss find the rules by reading the examples given on PPT and learn how to answer Yes/No questions If I were a girl, I could wear beautiful skirts! Would you choose to be a boy/ girl, if you had a choice? Yes, I would.
No, I wouldn’t. Might you choose to be a bird, if you had a choice? Yes, I might.
No, I mightn’t. 4)
Consolidation: Sentence Chain Divide the class into 8 groups, 6 students a group. Give them the situation where they can apply the rules of subjunctive mood into use. Example:
A: If I had the money, I would put it in the bank. Would
you put it in the bank if you had the money? B: No, I wouldn’t. I would travel around the world. Would you travel around if you had the money?
C: Yes, I would, but I would also…
D: …
E: …
Step 3 : Applying the rules ( Practice ) 1)
Do simple multiple choices to see whether the Ss really understand the rules or not. 2)
According to the pictures given on PPT, help Ss review the rules and learn to combine sentences using unreal if-clause, and get them prepared for the exercises on books.
a ) His children leave him alone. He feels lonely.
If his children ______________ him alone, he _______________ so lonely. If his children lived with him, would he still feel lonely? b) They have no classroom. They sit on the ground to have classes. If they ______ a classroom, they _____________ on the ground to have classes.
If they had a classroom, would they still sit on the ground to have classes? c) There are wars. People suffer a lot. 第

Ss finish exercise1 on P 71. 2)
Games ( Challenge yourself ) : a) Joke: to help Ss aware of the use of subjunctive mood in our daily life through performance and we can also refuse others using the unreal if clause. Boy: Will you marry me? Girl: I would marry you if you were the last boy on earth. b) Music: to help Ss learn English in an easy way and we can learn English even through Chinese songs. If I ________ (grow )a sun, I _______ (get) many suns; If I ____(get) many suns, I ____________ ( hang )one
in the Antarctica, one in the Arctic Ocean;
If I ____(get) many suns, I ____________ ( hang ) one in the winter and one in the evening; If the sun _____ (be) everywhere, there ___________ ( be ) coldness and darkness! c) Writing: to help Ss aware of the use of subjunctive mood in writing and we can also make suggestions using subjunctive mood. If I were a teacher, I will
teach the students how to learn well. If my students make mistakes in my subject, I won’t get angry with them, because failure is the mother of success and I will help them find the correct answers. If I am a teacher, I will give them more free time to relax themselves instead of much homework. If I were a teacher, I will make friends with them. Step 4: Recall the rules
Step 5: Assignment: Write a short passage with the title of If I were …
